Roger Scannura, one of Canada's foremost flamenco guitarists, has released Ritmo Flemenco, a selection of traditional songs that, to him, demonstrate how emotions, means of expression, form and content go hand in hand. Without the aid of special recording effects or re-cuts to ornament the music, these flamenco songs will give the listener an understanding of flamenco puro, where the focal point is emotion. From the solemn "soleares" to the exciting "bulerias", Scannura plays with the structure of these different rhythms while experimenting with tempo and melodic line. His technique is confident, his interpretations moving.
Roger Scannura has followed his love of flamenco to Spain, where he has studied with many well known masters in Madrid and Andalusia. In Canada he has studied with David Philips. He was guitarist and musical director for the Esmerelda Enrique Spanish Dance Company for five years. Scannura now makes his home in Toronto, where he performs regularly. He is the guiding force behind the newly formed group Ritmo Flamenco, which is dedicated to making the flamenco art form as accessible as possible.
