On the third Tuesday of every month, you'll be sure to catch
the best of songwriting and entertainment as host Trevor Mills
presents New Folk Night. Every month he sits down at his
computer and composes an email to a host of songwriters, and
invites them to submit a new song related to a theme he has
provided. From the submissions, the first 9 songwriters who
send in their new song are invited to play it & anything else
they'd like in a 20-min set each.

Feel free to email Trevor if you would like to be on the
mailing list - trevor@egate.net.

Wed Oct 16 - Tom Russell
$17.50adv/$20

"Russell's best songs underscore the human condition
and capture the soul of the common man with uncommon
	 decency."
	 --Chicago Sun Times

Tom Russell grew up in Southern California in the early 1950s,
listening to the West Coast "hillbilly" sounds of Buck Owens,
Merle Haggard, Merle Travis, Spade Cooley and Wynn Stewart. When
folk artists like Bob Dylan and Ian & Sylvia emerged in the 1960s
Russell began to hang around Los Angeles folk venues, hoping to
become a songwriter. He began his professional career in the skid
row bars on Vancouver, British Columbia in 1971.

Russell has now recorded 17 albums of original material. His songs
have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Doug Sahm, Dave
Alvin, Ian Tyson, Joe Ely, Suzy Bogguss, Iris DeMent, Peter Case,
k.d. lang, and Bob Neuwirth . . . among others. He is responsible
for writing or co-writing such roots classics as "Haley's Comet"
(with Dave Alvin), "Navajo Rug" (with Ian Tyson), "Beyond the
Blues" (with Peter Case and Bob Neuwirth), "Outbound Plane" (with
Nanci Griffith), "Blue Wing," and "Gallo del Cielo."

Thu Oct 17 - David Leask/
$12adv/$14 Suzie Vinnick CD Release

David Leask

Deeply rooted in his Scottish lowlands heritage, David Leask has
spent his past eight years in Canada building a spiritual and
artistic bridge between the powerful influences of his birthplace
and the fresh possibilities of his new home. With uncanny
poignancy, his songwriting resonates deeply in the hearts, minds
and souls of his loyal following.

On his latest CD, "Ancestors Eyes", Leask looks to the many and
varied people in his own life who've shaped who and where he is
today. Indeed, the title track was inspired by the revelation
that one of his own ancestors made the uncharted journey from
Scotland to Canada some 600 years before him. "I took a good look
at life through my ancestors' eyes. I'm learning from the wayward
and the wise". Leask's experiences and insights are interwoven
throughout his words and melodies in a penetrating mix of adult pop and
sharp-edged folk.

Suzie Vinnick CD Release - "33 Stars"

		    "An engaging performer"
		     -- The Globe and Mail

		  "One of my favourite singers"
		   -- Holger Peterson, CBC's Saturday
		      Night Blues

Suzie Vinnick's star is definitely on the rise. A singer-
songwriter with great depth and versatility, her debut album,
"Angel In The Sidelines", met with enthusiastic reviews tagging
Suzie as "one to watch" and an artist in demand on the Canadian music
scene. She has toured the club and festival circuits with
the exceptional guitarist, Rick Fines (Jackson Delta) and
percussionist extraordinaire, Miche Pouliot (Jann Arden, Bruce
Cockburn & k.d Lang).

"33 Stars" represents a new direction for Suzie. Where "Angel"
explores many musical genres, her current writing keeps to a more
contemporary style. The new recording marks a determined step
forward for both her songwriting and singing, which, considering the
response to Angel, will make it one of the most eagerly anticipated
releases of the new year.

Fri Oct 18 - Janis Ian
$30adv/$35
(only a few tix left)

"Only a handful of the great American troubadours
is still creating vital music. Some of the others
are dead, some are in creative eclipse, some are
forgotten, and better, some are rich and retired.
	 But Janis Ian endures. --
Robert K. Oerman

With a 30-year career that defies categorization, Janis Ian
continues to move audiences with her personal insights on love,
tenderness and faith. From her 1967 recording of "Society's
Child," a controversial folk-rock piece about interracial love,
to her hard-edged 1995 album, "Revenge," Ian has successfully
explored a range of musical genres.

The Nashville-based artist has produced 15 albums and captured
nine Grammy nominations, winning the award in 1975 for the
haunting single, "At Seventeen" and the album it appeared on,
"Between the Lines." Roberta Flack had a Top-10 hit with Ian's song
"Jesse," and her works also have been recorded by Bette
Midler, Kathy Mattea, Joan Baez, John Mellencamp and others.

Sat Oct 19	- Chris Whiteley & Friends
$10adv/$12

For over 25 years Chris Whiteley has been performing, writing,
and recording roots music, both as a multi-instrumentalist
(trumpet, harmonica, guitar, and pedal steel) and as a vocalist.
Along the way he has worked and recorded with such artists as
Leon Redbone, John Hammond, blues piano great Blind John
Davis, country stars Prairie Oyster and folk legend Tom Paxton
among many others. He has appeared on over 100 recordings.

Chris has four Juno nominations, including one for “Bluesology,”
recorded with longtime musical partner, brother Ken Whiteley. The
Jazz Report Awards named “Bluesology” Blues Album of the Year.
The latest release by The Whiteley Brothers is “Sixteen Shades of
Blue,” an album of all-original blues songs.

Chris has written a top ten Canadian country hit for Prairie
Oyster, and also had his songs recorded by such artists as Cindy
Church, Penny Lang, McGinty, Quartette and R & B favourites
