Toronto Blues Society=92s
16th Annual Women=92s Blues Revue
highlights the country=92s hottest blues divas
TORONTO, October 7, 2002=85 Building upon the tremendous success of past=20
years, the highly anticipated Women's Blues Revue returns for the 16th=20
year, highlighting seven of Canada's foremost female blues musicians, on=20
Saturday, November 23, 8 p.m. at The Music Hall (147 Danforth Avenue).
Hosted by Shelagh Rogers from CBC Radio=92s This Morning, performers in this=
=20
year=92s Women=92s Blues Revue are Lee Aaron, Diana Braithwaite, Georgette=
Fry,=20
Tracy K, Serena Ryder, Dawn Tyler Watson and Anne-Marie Woods.
Throughout her career, Lee Aaron has taken risks, exploring a variety of=20
genres from rock to opera. In 1997, Lee returned to her first love jazz.=20
In 2000, she released Slick Chick, her 10th album and first jazz recording.=
=20
Recent plans include a European release of Slick Chick, a European tour and=
=20
a return to the recording studio.
Diana Braithwaite is back on the scene with a hard-hitting blues album,=20
blues dance, to be released in November. One of the country=92s most=
engaging=20
performers, Braithwaite is a blues singer, actress, dancer, narrator,=20
choreographer, Gemini-award winning script writer, and a powerhouse of=20
endless energy.
The evening would not be complete without tunes being belted out by=20
Kingston=92s Georgette Fry. An award-winning blues vocalist and songwriter,=
=20
Fry continues to be a driving force in the Canadian blues scene, with her=20
career spanning two decades and the release of her third CD, Let Me Drive.
Canada=92s first lady of the blues harmonica, =93Mojo Mama=94 Tracy K has an=
=20
achingly beautiful and powerful voice. Tracey K=92s blues infused southern=
=20
sound is emphasized by her harp, acoustic rhythm guitar, and whiskey-soaked=
=20
rasp. She=92s touring Canada on the strength of her debut album Welcome To=
My=20
Fantasy.
At just 19-years-old, Peterborough=92s three-octave punk-folk singer, Serena=
=20
Ryder, takes the stage with surprising confidence, a rich voice, and=20
fearless songs. Her music is purposefully diverse and she has the ability=20
to sing it all with soul whether gospel, country, folk, jazz or blues.
Montreal-based Dawn Tyler Watson is the lead singer and bandleader for the=
=20
Dawn Tyler Blues Project. She is a multiple nominee at Canada's Maple Blues=
=20
Awards, and with good reason: she's a singer capable of remarkable=20
sultriness and nuance. A versatile and energetic performer, Tyler Watson=20
combines elements of R&B, gospel and jazz into a fully developed style of=20
her own.
Toronto-based singer, actor, dancer, poet, and narrator, Anne-Marie Woods=20
is well known for her work with a cappella sensation Four the Moment,=20
recent winners in the category of African Canadian Artist of the Year at=20
the East Coast Music Awards. Woods' versatility extends to the theatrical=20
stage as well as spoken word and comedy. The Women's Blues Revue=20
performance is her solo debut.
Every year, the evening is backed by an all-star cast featuring Women=92s=20
Blues Revue musical director Lily Sazz on keyboards; Marg Stowe on guitar;=
=20
Suzie Vinnick on bass; Michelle Josef on drums; and Colleen Allen, Sarah=20
McElcheran and Pat Wheeler on horns.
The Toronto Blues Society is proud to be featuring some of Canada's finest=
=20
blues women at the 16th annual Women=92s Blues Revue at 8 p.m. on Saturday,=
=20
November 23 at the Music Hall (147 Danforth Avenue). Tickets are $20 ($16=20
with a TBS card) and can be purchased through TicketMaster 416-870-8000,=20
