[mplpost] Contributing to other lists

Lets be positive for one moment and say Cheers to our fellow Canadian
musicians who manage to get airplay from time to time and thanks to some
folks who take the time to put it in print in one form or another so we
can see it for ourselves instead of having no clue about what the heck
is going on. If Richard or Val (who will never find their names on the
lists) don't care - so what - please use your delete button and spare us
your idiotic controversies.

Writes Val Cormier:

>Must be the changing of the seasons: Jerry Falwell goes off on
>another rant, as does our own Mr. Flohil... Why are we never
>treated to such outbursts on postcard2, Richard? ;-)

Postcard 2, for those wot don't know, is an excellent list of folk
who likes sorta alt.country stuff - from Wilco (whom, I don't like
very much) to Todd Snider and Merle Haggard to Dale Watson. Many
list people (including the Globe & Mail's Carl Wilson) can be a
little heavy on the intellectual side, and generally there seems to
be a bias against singer-songwriters and what they coyly call f--k
artists.

That's their loss, of course, but generally it's a bright and
entertaining list. And while I do contribute toi P2 from time to
time, I'm scared still of what might happen if I treated readers
there to whal Val calls "an outburst."

Hovever, here's one I did write on P2 recently about a band with the
unusual moniker of "UncleFucker" who got a showcase at a Nashville
music event and wrote to the list asking for free accommodation and
Dolly Parton's phone number. I wrote, a bit salty-like:

>Gawd, I don't want to get too serious about this, but do the folk in
>UncleFucker REALLY want to make it in this business, in Nashville or
>anywhere else?
>	They'd like free rooms in Nashville, they got a showcase to
>play, and they want to get hold of Dolly Parton so she's sing with
>them? Guys, get REAL!
>	We've had a bunch of layabouts in Toronto for years called
>Just a Bunch of Fucking Goofs, and I've no problem with that. Their
>name PERFECTLY describes their music and their attitude. They play
>every two months or so as some dingy bar, and their hardcore fans
>show up and get drunk and have a smashing time.
>	Now these lads who are going to Nashville got a showcase (and
>took a slot from someone who was probably serious about making
>progress in music), and they obviously either don't give a shit, in
>which case they should get outta the way and make room for someone
>who CARES about music. Or else they're so stupid that they think
>they can make a living with a dumb name that no-one can put on a
>marquee or in a newspaper ad.
>	Still, one hopes that irreverance is not mistaken for
>license. And that they'll grow up some day.

Cheers,

Richard
