TOM RUSSELL TO PLAY RARE
TORONTO CONCERT WED. OCTOBER 16
American songwriter Tom Russell will play a rare Toronto concert at
Hugh's Room on Wednesday October 16. His songs have been covered by
Johnny Cash, the late Doug Sahm, Suzy Bogguss, Joe Ely, Sylvia Tyson
and k.d. lang, among dozens of others, and Nanci Griffith, Ian Tyson
and Dave Alvin have all had hits with songs co-written with him.
Russell's long resume-- he made the first of his 17 albums
back in 1976 - includes a spell as a landed immigrant in Canada,
during which he was on the staff of The Georgia Straight, then
western Canada's only "alternative" newspaper.
Who: Tom Russell with long-time guitarist Andrew Hardin.
What: Some of the best "Americana" songs performed by a superb songwriter.
When: Wednesday October 16, 8:30 p.m.
Where: Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. W., Toronto
How much: $17.50 in advance, $20.00 at the door. Phone reservations:
416 531--6604
Russell now lives in El Paso, Texas, close to the Mexican border, but
his residencies in Vancouver, Brooklyn, and Austin - not to mention
his travels in Europe and Central America - have all informed his
songs, many of which tell powerful stories.
A sterling performer, Russell will appear with his long-time
compadre, guitar virtuoso Andrew Hardin.
