GREEK-CANADIAN PERFORMER CHARMS BEIJING
CONCERT GOERS, WOWS WUHAN AUDIENCES
******************************************

George Sapounidis, an Ottawa-based international singer and musician of
Greek descent, has returned from a ten-day tour in mainland China.
Sapounidis entertained Chinese audiences with performances in September 2002
at the 5th Annual Beijing International Cultural Tourism Festival 2002, and
the Wuhan International Tourism Festival in Hubei province. The Beijing
Festival is sponsored by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality and
the National Tourism Administration.

Sapounidis presented traditional and original Chinese songs as well as Greek
repertoire while accompanying himself on guitar and Greek bouzouki.
Sapounidis was the only solo singer and the only foreign artist to perform
most of his repertoire in the Chinese language. His on-stage banter with
audiences was conducted exclusively in Mandarin.

Sapounidis received coverage and interviews by the following Chinese media:

1) Beijing Chaoyang Cable TV
2) China Travel Satellite TV
3) Touch Beijing (Beijing english language radio program)
4) Wuhan Morning Post
5) Yangtze Daily
6) Wuhan TV station
7) Shandong TV station

Both Festivals featured predominantly traditional dance ensembles from:
U.S.A. (including Hawaii), Brazil, Guinea, Nepal, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia,
Belgium, France, Finland, Vietnam, Thailand, Nepal, Spain, Canada, and
China. The other Canadian participants besides Sapounidis comprised a native
dance theatrical group from Toronto. Performances took place in the context
of opening ceremonies, outdoor marching parades and on outdoor and indoor
stages.

Sapounidis received the invitations on the heels of his previous appearance
in May 2002 when he charmed Beijing concert goers at the 3rd Annual Meet In
Beijing Arts Festival. Sapounidis also appeared in China in October and
November of 2000 when he impressed audiences with performances of Chinese
and Greek folksongs at the Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Art Festival
and the Nanning International Arts Festival of Folksongs.

Sapounidis is a rarity among Canadian folk singers - a polyglot, he performs
international folksongs in up to nine languages.
This was his 3rd performance visit to China.
