[mplpost] RE: Radio Play..um...repost

I'm reposting this for what should be an obvious reason given the thread.
This premise pertains to COMMERCIAL radio and if true, should rattle the
mental cages of all who place significance on airplay.

I was visiting the Scherzo Pub here in Kingston last night and the subject
of radio was brought to my attention by a friend of mine who has just
released an indie album. He was trying to get me excited about this new idea
of his, namely a joint production venture of a 60 min show featuring the
work of local indie artists. His thinking is based on this understanding he
has, which I cannot at this point confirm, that private radio stations have
a CRTC mandate to devote 1 hour of programming time per week to play local
artists. He maintains that the stations cry about their wallets and so in
effect, bypass this CRTC requirement without fear of recourse. He believes
that if a 60 min segment were produced 'out of house' and simply handed to
the station, that they would have no acceptable excuse to fall back on. If
his premise regarding the CRTC mandate proves correct, then perhaps he has a
valid idea in theory.....though a 60 min indie show at 5:00 am may not be
enough of a payoff...
Has anyone heard of this CRTC mandate?

Del

Well, thanks for understanding, Dave! And discussions like this DO
get people thinking, talking, questioning assumptions, etc. Dunno
how many of my so-called "trade secrets" I want to hand out for free,
but I suppose there could be some (none of 'em rocket science) to
prove I'm not always a grumpyt, moaning, whining, negative s.o.b.

And here's one: Do not think, because you spend too many hours at
your computer promoting your music, that this medium is as important
to others as it is to you. Despite it all, people still read
newspapers and magazines, watch television, and even - once in a
while - listen to "folk" radio, if there is any in their
neighbourhood.

Oh, and add that "wink" sign - ;)

Richard
