[mplpost] Those CanCon lists

Whoops, I've put my hand in the hornet's nest again!

Let's get specific, can we? Just how many American "folk djs" are
there who contribute playlists so Harry can plough through them and
come up with a list that proves Enoch gets more airplay than Bruce
Cockburn? On some programmes, somewhere.

Suitably chastened by Vic's response, and aware that Jory and Lenore
and many others are able to take promotional advantage of their
rankings on this "chart" - I understand that and congratulate them on
taking advantage of any chart listing, however specious. I'm glad
Jory figures out he's made $7,000 in two years because he was listed;
I'm delighted Lenore figures it gets her a bit better known; I'm glad
that such lists tip Vic and others to artists he's not come across
yet.

Nonetheless, I continue (under a barrage of ack ack fire) to suggest
that this chart is as threadbare as the poster on an American blues
list who proudly proclaimed that he was number #5 on the MP3
Christian Blues Chart. It really doesn't reflect the reality of
radio play, of record sales, or much of anything - except that some
people who programme some folk shows on a some stations give their
playlists to a list, and Harry extracts the Canadian names and
provides that list to the rest of us.

I don't need to be told that "folk radio", per se, is a somewhat
limited field. Just how limited? I don't know, but I'd be
interested in finding out. One more thing, does Harry's list include
the programming of folk like Michael Regenstrief at one end of the
country and Valerie Cormier at the other? Perhaps Vic has the
answer(s).

As someone, as Vic pointed out, who makes (some!) of his living
working with little-known, unknown and occasionally very well-known
"folk" artists, it would be more instructive to know who these djs
were, where they are, and what kind of numbers their shows have. Can
mere publicists join folk dj? And if so, how?

Cheers,

Richard
