[mplpost] cancon lists

i hope that harry bryan takes heart from all these emails of support because
i too think that he and vic provide an invaluable service. i can't tell you
the contacts/requests for cds/offers of on-air interviews etc. i've had as a
result of showing up on playlists and on harry's weekly list. (here's
betting that by talking about it, i jinx myself and end my current streak:).
i wouldn't think anybody on this list is clueless enough to think the
results are indicative of overall airplay for major artists like lightfoot
or joni, but for us indies it certainly is significant if we're getting
played when these dj's are swamped with cds and yet are impressed enough to
give us a spin.

cdbaby asks their customers how they heard about the music they are buying
so i know if i'm selling because of airplay. granted we're not talking huge
sales here. but i listened in to a business panel workshop at summerfolk
this year and there was much wailing from the front about the big bad
useless internet and evil downloading and "well how many cds do you indies
really sell off the net anyway" and my response is "who cares". you build a
mailing list one fan at a time. you make radio connections one dj at a time.
if even one club wants to book me because they saw me on harry's list,
that's a start. the net has provided us with a means to share music and info
as a community in a way that's unprecedented and the folk-dj and maplepost
lists are a prime example of that. i got an email from a dj just yesterday
who asked if there was "something in the water up there" because of the
quality of music he gets from canada and the cancon list is a weekly
reminder of that quality and a very productive use of the net for everybody
involved. imho anyway. back to lurking.

thanks again harry!
see y'all at ocff and nerfa.
