Hayes & Cahill Make Their Toronto Debut
Toronto, 02/10/02 – Internationally renowned for “taking traditional music
to the very edge of the genre” [Chicago Sun Times], Irish fiddle virtuoso
Martin Hayes and American master guitarist Dennis Cahill will make their
Toronto concert debut on Saturday, October 19, 2002, 8:00pm at the Hart
House Theatre, 7 Hart House Circle, University of Toronto. This concert is
presented by Colourmark Productions. Tickets are $27 ($22 student/senior),
and are available at the Hart House Theatre Box Office (416-978-8668).
Hayes & Cahill deliver traditional Irish folk tunes with a haunting
sweetness. Focusing mainly on the exquisitely slow and lyrical music of the
East Clare region, six-time “All-Ireland Fiddle Champion” Martin Hayes and
acoustic guitarist Dennis Cahill have developed the poetic interplay of two
jazz masters – indeed, the New York Times declared their sparse, intuitive
approach “a Celtic complement to Steve Reich’s quartets or Miles Davis’s
Sketches of Spain.” The duo’s exploration of the melodies of County Clare
is an exceptional take on Celtic music – combining a jazz sensitivity with a
classicist’s sense of timbre, they produce music tight and precise, creating
“a vast spacious soundscape, aching with the celebration of centuries.”

Hayes & Cahill have released two albums on Green Linnet Records – The
Lonesome Touch (1997), and Live in Seattle (1999). A third duo album is
currently in production.
In one of only three Canadian performances this year, Martin Hayes and
Dennis Cahill will bring their enchanting vision of traditional Celtic tunes
with a modern sensibility to Toronto audiences for the first time. Hayes
and Cahill’s music has charmed audiences and critics alike both in Ireland
and throughout the U.S.A. – and on October 19, Toronto lovers of world-class
