computer and composes an email to a host of songwriters, and
invites them to submit a new song related to a theme he has
provided. From the submissions, the first 9 songwriters who
send in their new song are invited to play it & anything else
they'd like in a 20-min set each.

Wed Nov 20 - Zubot & Dawson
$12adv/$14

1999 Juno Nominees Zubot & Dawson are an exciting and original
new instrumental group from Vancouver, BC who have taken the
acoustic music scene by storm. Jesse Zubot and Steve Dawson are
two young virtuoso musicians on guitar, mandolin and fiddle who
bring a fresh and totally unique sound to the roots music that
has influenced them - from blues, bluegrass and jazz to reggae
and groove-based soundscapes.

They have travelled extensively across Canada appearing at
numerous clubs and festivals, and have received worldwide airplay
of their highly acclaimed album "Strang" (nominated for both a
Juno and West Coast music award).

Twenty-three year old Jesse Zubot (fiddle and mandolin) has been
playing professionally for 16 years. His move from Saskatchewan
to Vancouver in 1992 has made him one of the busiest musicians on
the west coast. He has appeared on film, soundtracks, many albums
and can be seen around Vancouver playing with such artists as
Gypsalero, Linda McRae, Sweet Papa Lowdown and Tumbleweed. His
interest in jazz and avant-garde combined with a wealth of
experience in folk, rock and bluegrass make his compositions
extremely original.

Twenty-six year old Steve Dawson (slide guitar, Weissenborn,
acoustic guitar, banjo) has established himself on the
international scene since attending Berklee College of Music in
Boston, by touring extensively in Canada, the US and Europe. His
reputation as a slide guitarist (both bottleneck and lap-style)
has earned him sessions on over 20 albums, as well as TV
soundtracks, film and concert appearances with Linda McCrae,
John Bottomley, Bocenphus King and Tumbleweed. While his true
love for traditional country blues, Hawaiian, ragtime and
bluegrass is evident, his own pieces are far from derivative.

Thu Nov 21 - Michael Smith
$18adv/$20 Opening set: Norm Hacking

Michael Smith has been singing and writing since the early '60s,
but it was Steve Goodman's inclusion of many of his songs in
concert and his 1973 recording of "The Dutchman" that brought him
wide notice. Goodman recorded many more of his songs, and a long
list of songwriters in varied musical genres recorded "The
Dutchman," "Spoon River," "Talk Backwards" and many other Smith
songs (Anne Hills, John McDermott, Liam Clancy, Tom Rush, Trout
Fishing in America, Jimmy Buffett, Tony Trischka and Claudia
Schmidt). He is also prominent in musical theatre, notably
writing the music for and appearing in the Tony-award winning
adaptation of Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath."

His latest recording "There," issued as an indie last year,
has just been reissued by Wind River.

Norm Hacking

Norm Hacking is a critically acclaimed 30+ year veteran of the
Canadian folk music scene, who is well respected by both peers
and audiences. In fact, songwriters from Chicago (Michael Smith)
to Nashville (Alan Rhody) to Whitehorse (Mikel Miller) and a
who's who of Toronto-area songwriters contributed their
renditions of Norm's songs to "One Voice: A Tribute to Norm
Hacking, Vol. 1" (Nancy White, Ron Nigrini, Jason Fowler, Jory
Nash, Marianne Girard, Slowpoke, Roger James, Brenda Lewis,
Wayne Marshall, and many more).

Norm's songs range from whimsical, to humorous looks at modern
life, to the emotional ups and downs of relationships, soul
searching, and social commentary. Others are tributes or stories
that have the character development of a biography. Whatever the
type, you're sure to appreciate the talent of this great Canadian
songwriter.

Fri Nov 22/26 - Fred Eaglesmith
$18adv/$20
Note: Fri's show is sold out
Tix are still available for the Nov 26th concert

Long recognized as one of the finest songwriters in the
alternative country scene, his songs have been recorded by
Cowboy Junkies, Dar Williams, and most recently Kasey Chambers.
Film director Martin Scorsese has used his songs, as have various
others including James Caan in his new movie "Viva Los Nowhere."

His live performance has been compared to Steve Earle and Bruce
Springsteen for the juxtapostion of manic energy and quiet
intensity, humor and sadness.

Eaglesmith has won a Juno Award, and regularly scores albums
on critics’ top ten lists on both sides of the border. His latest
& 11th album, "Falling Stars and Broken Hearts", with its
burnished blend of alternative country and americana music, is
sure to do the same.

Sat Nov 23 - Eric Andersen
$18adv/$20 Opening set: Kat Goldman

Eric Andersen's songs, voice, and guitar have created a career
spanning over 30 years, that includes 21 albums of original
songs, and numerous tours of North America, Europe, and Japan.
His songs have been recorded by artists all over the world,
including Judy Collins, Fairport Convention, Peter Paul and Mary,
Rick Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, The Grateful Dead, and Francoise Hardy.

In 1963, songwriter Tom Paxton heard him perform at the Coffee
Gallery in North Beach, California, and invited him to New York
City. In 1964, Eric was soon introduced to the Greenwich Village
songwriting circle of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan.

In the Village folk and jazz clubs, he witnessed singing and
playing of some of America's greatest blues, and jazz masters
alive. The list of people heard whose music he absorbed, was
vast; performers like Mississippi John Hurt, Judy Roderick,
Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Skip James, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy
Waters, John Lee Hooker, Doc Watson, Dave Van Ronk, Doc Watson,
Reverend Gary Davis, David Blue, Uncle Dave Macon, Fred Neil,
Son House, Anita O'Day, Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, John
Coltrane, and Miles Davis. It was in these clubs where he
learned, first-hand, how a master musician can with one voice
or one instrument, captivate an audience... & he learned it well.

Kat Goldman

Kat Goldman is one of those expressive spirits that draws you
into her collection of songs like one jelly bean’s decadence
coaxes you into eating the whole bag. You bite into the first
song and you’re hooked.

The attraction to the music found on her debut CD, "The Great
Disappearing Act", is the eloquence of Kat’s storytelling style.
Escapism and the perpetual searching for one’s self are strong
themes of Kat’s lyrical journey.

Influenced by some of the great musical icons, Joni Mitchell,
Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, Kat’s on-stage persona is a musical
cocktail, a distinctive blend of coffee house comfort and snappy
pop pertinence. With a unique structuring of melody and infectious
hooks, the honesty and often whimsical humor of Kat Goldman are
the crux of her musical ID card...
