Hi Steve,

Thanks Mike for helping to clarify all of this.

Here is my standard response to questions about the CanCon report (which
should probably be renamed "The Canadian Artist Airplay Report").

There are two reports done on a regular basis:

The Canadian CanCon report and The International CanCon report.

The Canadian Report

This report is compiled on a monthly basis from Canadian radio shows
that post their playlists to folkdj-l and/or maplepost.

It is a monthly report that shows the number of spins and the number of
playlists artists appeared on during that month.

The International Report

This report is compiled on a weekly basis from all non-Canadian radio
shows that post their playlists to folkdj-l.

It is a weekly report that shows the number of consecutive weeks artists
have appeared on at least one playlist and the number of spins during
that week.

Things that apply to both reports:

Although the reports are called CanCon reports they do not deal with the
CRTC definition.
If a Canadian artist records a song written by Lennon and McCartney in
Paris, France it is counted.
If an artist born and living in Germany records a song by Jean Chretien
and Sheila Copps in Fredericton, New Brunswick it is not counted.

Canadian artists are in the main defined as:

Canadian citizens wherever they live.
Landed immigrants currently residing in Canada.

The actual genre of radio show is not taken into account. If Q107
started reporting it's metal playlists to folkdj-l I would try to count
the Canadian artists and spins. The only qualifier here is that the
radio station or dj reports to folkdj-l and/or maplepost.

Tracking is not done by when the song was actually played but rather by
when the playlist was posted.
For international lists it is from 3:01 to 3:00 PM each Saturday.
For Canadian lists it is from 12:01 AM on the first of each month to
midnight on the last day of each month.

If an artists performs live on a radio show I count each song performed
as a seperate spin as long as it is posted as a playlist to folkdj-l
and/or maplepost.

If I miss anything I will make verifiable corrections in the next report
as long as someone lets me know. I can't go back more than one report.

I try to keep the stations and DJ's for each show that reports current
but don't pay as much attention to that part of it. I don't keep contact
information of any description. The DJ's usually post that on a weekly
basis with their playlists.

Although the reports are sent to Socan they have no official status
there and I am not affiliated with them other than as a songwriter.

That's essentially it. If you have any specific questions in addition to
this fire away. I'll do my best to respond.

Thanks,

Harry
