Shankar & Gingger with Zakir Hussain
Legends of Indian Music

On Friday, November 22, 8:00 p.m. at the George Weston Recital Hall, 5040
Yonge St., Small World Music proudly presents an evening of Indian music by
some of the world's top performing artists. Tickets: $20-$45, at
416-870-8000.

Two towering figures in Indian music, double violinist and singer L.
SHANKAR and tabla master ZAKIR HUSSAIN, were founding members of Shakti.
They are joined by Shankar's protege Gingger on double violin for a tour of
North America, including a return visit to Toronto after their remarkable
concert last October.

When players of this calibre unite, the audience is in for a sonic feast.
From transcendent ragas and hauntingly beautiful melodies to stunning
rhythmic fireworks, their music encompasses the best of ancient and modern.

L. SHANKAR has entranced audiences the world over. Some of the most daring,
exuberant and technically proficient improvisational music of the past
decade has come from the bow of his violin. An acclaimed virtuoso
violinist, singer, composer and producer, in 1980 Shankar introduced the
double violin. His own invention, this unique ten string instrument covers
the entire range of the orchestral string section. There are only two like
it in existence and both will be performed in concert November 22. The
unmistakable sound of the double violin and Shankar's haunting vocals have
been heard on numerous recordings in various idioms, from classical to pop
music. He has collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa, Phil Collins,
Yoko Ono, Bruce Springsteen and Talking Heads among others.

"...Shankar's voice, itself a wonderment, with a five octave range and
seemingly effortless delivery."

ZAKIR HUSSAIN has broadened the profile of the tabla beyond the field of
Indian classical music and onto the world stage. In doing so, he has played
a major role in the contemporary world music movement. His many historic
collaborations, including Shakti, the Diga Rhythm Band, Planet Drum with
Mickey Hart and recordings with artists as diverse as George Harrison, Bill
Laswell, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders and Tito Puente have helped make the
sound of the tabla an international phenomenon. A virtuoso of the highest
order, his consistently brilliant performances have not only established
him as a national treasure in his own country, but have gained him
worldwide fame. The favourite accompanist of many of India's greatest
musicians and dancers, from Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar to Shivkumar
Sharma, his playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful
improvisational dexterity.

GINGGER, a gifted violinist, singer and songwriter was born in Los Angeles.
She has toured for the past six years with Shankar and has appeared on
several recording projects. Along with Shankar, she is the only performer
to have mastered the double violin.
