Toronto based latin music vocalist Eliana Cuevas performs for the first
time as a solo artist at Toronto's premier jazz venue, the Top O' The=
Senator,
from Monday, November 25 to Sunday December 1.
With a distinctive voice and a commanding stage presence, Eliana Cuevas
has recently stepped up her solo career with a series of appearances at
venues such as Lula Lounge and the Rex Jazz and Blues Bar. Young,
gifted and highly experienced, the Venezuelan born singer has created a
reputation for herself as a skilled songwriter and bold interpreter of latin
american classics.
Accompanying the singer for her performance at the Top O The Senator
will be some of the finest musicians from Toronto's jazz and latin scenes
including Nick ALi on trumpet and flugelhorn, Gord Sheard on piano,
Louis Sim=E3o on bass Luisito Orbegoso on percussion and Davide di Renzo
at the drum set.
Eliana Cuevas has appeared on recordings with pop artist Jo=E9e, latin-jazz
unit Cruzao, reggae group Tabarruk, latin-folk band Cassava & sings=
regularly
with the Brazilian outfit Pedras da Rua. In September Eliana appeared on
CBC Radio One's new show "GO!", accompanied by Luis Mario Ochoa of
Cimarr=F3n. The Eliana Cuevas pre-release CD Cohesion was charted number
one in August 2002 for the CKLN 88.1 FM international charts.
Amongst a long list of mentors, Eliana=92s unique approach is influenced
by latin icons such as Rub=E9n Blades and Guaco, and the illustrious=
Brazilians
Elis Regina and Jobim. Eliana has studied with well known vocal teachers=
both
here and in Venezuela, and sings in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
