La Fiesta Tropique de Montr=E9al
Montreal is considered one of the most creative zones for new global
music,
and the groups CONVOY CUBANO and CHANGO FAMILY are two reasons
why. Imported to Toronto as part of Coup de Coeur 2002 (the French
language
music festival sponsored by Centre de Francophone de Toronto) La Fiesta
de
Tropique de Montreal is an innovative presentation of music from
Canada's
francophone capital, presented in Toronto's most acclaimed new live
music venue,
Lula Lounge.
CONVOY CUBANO
Thursday November 28
10pm $10.00
with dj Billy Bryans
Lula Lounge
1585 Dundas West
Cuban-Canadian musicians, all Montrealers, CONVOY CUBANO,
combine Cuban son and guajira music with contemporary hip hop and rap.
CONVOY CUBANO started out as a basement project of producers/rappers
Neiver =93Cubanito=94 Alvarez and Reinery =93Vikingo=94 Diaz. The duo were
experimenting in the studio with different styles of Cuban music and
felt that
their tracks needed a live feel, so they decided to bring in the best
Cuban musicians
that Montreal had to offer. They called their friends: Lead singer Oscar
Fuentes,
bassist Lazaro Leiva, drummer/percussionist Osmundo Calzado, guitarist
Narciso
Garcias, tres player Oscar Morejon, keyboard player Jesus Alejandro
Perez, and
conga player Morris Zalazar...all Montrealers of Cuban origin, working
and playing
in different bands in and around the city.
Et voil=E1, CONVOY CUBANO was re-born. From there it was a simple step to
get the demo to Laurent Saultnier of The Montreal Jazz Festival, who
heard three
songs and immediately booked them for the De Maisoneuve/Crescent Street
outdoor stage of the Montreal Jazz Festival where CONVOY CUBANO created
a sensation amongst Montreal's otherwise jaded Crescent Street
scenesters. Performing
again for les Francofolies, CONVOY CUBANO (like the Puentes Brothers in
Vancouver
and Alberto Alberto in Toronto) firmly established themselves as part of
the new wave of
Canadian-Cuban music scene.
CHANGO FAMILY
Friday November 29
9pm $10.00
Lula Lounge
1585 Dundas West
Charismatic band leader Lundo, of CHANGO FAMILY calls their music
'gypsy-reggae', others have described it as global party music for the
new
millennium, many will be simply too busy dancing to even bother with
categories.....
Yet, however they are described , Montreal's CHANGO FAMILY have won
over
Quebec audiences with their high voltage, traveling minstrel
performances
Winners of the prestigious 2001 edition of les Francouverts, (a music
competition dedicated to the promotion of francophone artists), CHANGO
FAMILY are poised to go national with the release of their self-titled
album on
Audiogram Records, a deft and energetic melange of folk, African, Gypsy,
and
Caribbean influences.
CHANGO FAMILY's socially aware lyrics come in a variety of languages of
which French, English, Spanish and Creole languages are but a few. With
a
sound fleshed out by a fiddle, mandolin, horn section and a ferocious
rhythm
section, CHANGO FAMILY are poised to take on the rest of the world
