  Uuuummmm......... No

    It suggests that there is
a notable connection between modern electronic music and folk or roots
music

Some might beg to differ. I might be that one.

Artists such as Compass Records' Shooglenifty have successfully fused
electronica beat-driven immediacy with roots and folk music. Even though
they don't use a DJ (samples are fine for them), they still register quite
high on the folk scale, using banjos, mandolins and acoustic guitars. More
importantly, though, hugely commercial artists such as Beck, The Chemical
Brothers, Beth Orton and Moby have produced music with folk sounds and
technological advancements in music to match.

I would even go far as to say the electronica raves of the past decade
aspire to the same community spirit felt in the folk and roots festivals
from the past to present. Fatboy Slim's Brighton Beach parties in England
had over 250,000 people dancing, probably half the amount was groovin' to
the Lovin' Spoonful 30 years earlier at Woodstock. Remember, when
electronica broke big back in mid--80s with Acid House, the audiences were
dressed in fashion similar to the hippies - tie dyed, smiley faces,
bandanas, and round sunglasses. It was The Summer of Love all over again for
most of the media.

I'm not even going to write about the drugs. :)
