Perhaps stand mics are considered more _traditional_ in the folk sense.
:-)

Anyhow, I second the vote for headset mics. We use them for Christmas
Show because they give us flexibility and freedom, and also get rid of
stage clutter. The Christmas show uses the whole stage and even has a
ten minute pantomime in it. Hard to do when pinned to one spot by a
stand mic.

They do have advantages and disadvantages - depending on what you want
from them - but they are light, comfortable and easy to wear, (and small
enough not to make you look like a Martian.) They stay the same distance
from your mouth all the time which can be a disadvantage if you like to
play the mic, (but a compressor set subtly will prevent overloading) but
is a definite advantage to me because they're almost impossible to pop
percussively.

Someone said that one disadvantage was that he couldn't talk to band
members without the audience hearing. This is very true, but it's made
us concentrate on not excluding the audience by talking to each other.
We can only talk to each other _through_ the audience.

Technology is there to support the music - not as an end in itself. If
your show benefits from the flexibility radio mics give you then there's
nothing either presumptuous or pretentious about them. They are only
pretentious when used in an inappropriate situation for the sake of
looking cool (f'rinstance, taking your radio headset to an open mic
night.)

When not touring our Christmas Show, we usually use regular mics on boom
stands because the show is in a straight concert format.
