[mplpost] paying for CD's (or performances)

Dean Verger asked "When should a professional (musician, promoter, DJ) in
the music business pay for CDs?"

I have a related question - When should a music business person (especially
an agent or presenter) pay to see an act perform live?

As an agent considering new artists, I like to see their performance on
stage to judge their ability to entertain an audience. I know presenters
prefer to do the same before hiring an act. Buying tickets or paying cover
charges for all these shows can add up very quickly.

I don't need to see the whole show or even take a chair. Would most
presenters allow someone else in the business to stand at the back and take
in a set? Is there a protocol such as to contact the performer or presenter
ahead of time?

Thanks,
Doug Baker
