Whet the appetite for
summer concerts on the waterfront
Rhythms
of the
World
2002
June 14 to September 2
TORONTO, April 30, 2002 -- Harbourfront Centre whets the appetite for
Rhythms of the World summer festival series releasing more details of its
festival season. The Harbourfront Centre Concert Stage is one of the city's
premier venues for live music throughout the summer. With free concerts all
summer long, Harbourfront Centre is the ideal location to discover new
music from around the world.
At Canada Day presented by Duck Tape, Harbourfront Centre proudly presents
the best of Canadian music. Quebec-based La Vol=E9e d'Castors (Saturday, Jun=
e
29 at 9:30 pm) play contemporary arrangements with traditional instruments.
11-time East Coast Music Award winner Lennie Gallant returns to the
Harbourfront Centre Concert Stage on Monday, July 1 at 3:30 pm. That same
evening is a double bill that displays the true diversity of Toronto with
Kiran Ahluwalia at 8 pm and Ron Sexsmith at 9:30 pm. Kiran Ahluwalia
performs two distinct styles of vocal music -- ghazals and Punjabi folk
songs -- from the Indian subcontinent. Ron Sexsmith's ability to conjure
images, characters, plot or just plain emotion has earned him praise from
Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and Sheryl Crow, among others.
The Labatt Blue's Festival has a history of staging internationally known
blues greats with accomplished Canadian acts. This year's international
highlight is on Saturday, July 6, 2 pm with a concert by one of the most
beloved figures in American music, Odetta. Following at 3:30 pm is BC-based
Harry Manx, who combines lap-slide guitar with the Mohan Veena (a 20-string
member of the guitar family). At 10 pm its hard blues for modern times with
multi-award nominated act, Paul Reddick + The Sidemen.
By far the pre-eminent festival of the season, World's Fare brings the four
corners of the world together at Harbourfront Centre. The celebration kicks
off in style with the previously announced Pier Party featuring Arfo-beat
all-star, Femi Kuti on July 11. The next night brings a red-hot concert
known as Vive La World featuring Issa Bagayogo, P18 and Cheikha Rimitti.
Malian Issa Bagayogo is keenly aware of the rich tradition of his homeland;
in addition to his velvety-smooth vocals, he plays the traditional 6-string
lute called kam=E9l=E9 n'goni'. P18's sound is a blend of new and traditiona=
l
Caribbean music, a true fusion full of Latin effusion. Cheikha Rimitti's
warm and harsh voice, sings the poetry of her land, Algeria.
Ritmo y Color showcases a fusion of contemporary and traditional Latin
American culture. On Saturday. July 20 at 9:30 pm Harbourfront Centre
features Yerba Buena, the band that the New York Times says, "triply
superimpose[s] American funk on Afro-Cuban music on Nigerian Afrobeat and
lets [the] different kinds of Yoruban-derived music seep into one another."
Closing the weekend is Afrofandango at 2 pm on Sunday, July 21.
Afrofandango is a live encounter between the musical traditions of the Son
Jarocho (traditional music from Veracruz) and the traditional music from
Senegal.
Carlsberg Light Kick Up Your Heels presented by NOW Magazine is a weekend
that concentrates on the art of dance. Thus, the live music performances
are selected to allow audiences to practice their newly acquired skills.
UK-based Horace X is global dance music. Folk Roots magazine says of Horace
X, "...freewheelin' happening samples, scratches and lots of groovy dance
ideas with Middle Eastern folk tunes."
Guinness Island Soul presented by NOW Magazine seems to have one breakout
artist every year and this year is no exception. On Saturday August 3 at
9:30 pm, Harbourfront Centre presents the Toronto debut of Gigi. She is a
stunning young Ethiopian singer, who reaches from the past with a spiritual
vision for the future, reminding us of fundamental human truths: devotion,
harmony, and beauty.
Rhythms of the World runs from June 14 through September 2 with a new
festival every weekend. For more information, the public can contact the
