From ocff@icomm.ca Tue Apr 30 19:11:57 2002 Date: Tue Apr 30 19:11:57 2002 From: OCFF ocff@icomm.ca Subject: [mplpost] OCFF info--take note! The Ontario Council of Folk Festivals annual conference showcase deadline is in t-minus 15 days and counting. I wanted to let ALL artists know that you *will* be able to apply through the Canada Council Outreach office for travel assistance to the OCFF Ottawa conference should you be selected to showcase officially. If you are an artist outside of Ontario, and you're thinking 'OCFF sounds great, but I can't afford to get there'...you can now perish the thought 'cause you will have options! If you are an Ontario artist, the Outreach office will consider travel support on a case by case basis ...which is a far sight better than an outright "no 'cause you're in the same province as the event"! The OCFF worked diligently with Canada Council to ensure it's conference is eligible for this type of assistance...so let's use it! The thing is, you've got to apply to be selected...so send in those applications. Artists can apply from anywhere in Canada (and elsewhere for that matter, but you've gotta be a Canuck for Council cash). East Coast (hi ECMA people)! West Coast (Mr. Simpson, how are you today?)! Yukon (right Mark Smith?)! All the good stuff in the middle (salut FOLQuebec!)! It doesn't matter where you live...this is a great opportunity and we want you to go for it! Call me with questions if you've got 'em. Application forms available from the website, or via fax n'mail. http://www.icomm.ca/ocff Ok thanks, erin Erin Benjamin _____________ Executive Director Ontario Council of Folk Festivals P.O. Tanglefoot will roar, full throttle, into this fair city once again on May 3rd, finally touching down for a brief visit after exhaustive forays across Great Britain and North America. This is a rare Toronto performance not to be missed as they're so busy travelling the world that they don't get to the Big Smoke very often. And this is a very special concert to celebrate the release of their brand new CD! The combined talents of Joe Grant, Steve Ritchie, brother Rob Ritchie, Al Parrish and Terry Young always culminate in a whirlwind of thunderously energetic, dynamic, solid, passionate, powerhouse performances that will raise the roof, fill your hearts with joy and arouse your whole being to dance. Tanglefoot bring a rare intensity, and energy to their art which has them touring throughout North America and Great Britain to wildly enthusiastic crowds. Every member takes a turn on lead vocals and then they put all that talent together to deliver a harmony sound that is simply breathtaking. Combining tradition with creativity and innovation, the hilarious with the poignant and the furious with the passionate, Tanglefoot fuses high musical standards with superior showmanship. Comments: "Simply one of the best live groups I have ever seen." - Sheree Gillcrist, Canadian Folk Music Bulletin "Strong songwriting, a crowd-pleasing bundle of talent and energy...the kind that gives folk music a good name." - Nancy White "Tanglefoot have a powerful and dashing presence and if, like me, you ever find yourself sitting in the middle of them whilst they're in full flight, you'll discover the effect to be quite exhilerating." - Henry Ayrton, BBC Night Network, The Folk & Roots Show "Among the best-received acts I have ever had at one of my events.... and nice people too!" - Sonny Ochs If you've never heard Tanglefoot before, why not come out and give yourself a huge treat, and for those of you familiar with them, come out and repeat the pleasure! _____________________________________________________ Lillian Aida Wauthier Acoustic Harvest Folk Club: http://acousticharvest.cjb.net Fiddles and Frets Music Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Lillipat - Music for Young Children Mariposa Folk Foundation Email: lillianw@interlog.com Telephone: 416-264-2235/Fax: 264-2168 _____________________________________________________ check out Colin Stewart: http://colinstewart.cjb.net/ "You must ensure, no matter the cost, that the legacy of these great ships is not lost." - John Prince "Well it's alright... His style is very texan and his skills are out of this world for such a young player. I have a memory of one day where I got to jam with Chris with him on the drums and me on Bass, which was funny as anything because he is not much of a drummer (yet) and I am not much of a bass player (yet) :) Now if I could only get him into some of my folkie jams... that would be interesting. Which is a roundabout way of saying that I fear many good people will miss the double bill of THE WAIFS and LUTHER WRIGHT &THE WRONGS at The Horseshoe Tavern tomorrow night (Thursday May 2). Which would be a shame, since it's the chance to welcome back THE WAIFS to Canada; this is their first date of a tour that will keep them in Canada until next October (with some brief side trips to the UK, the U.S., and back home to Australia. Vicki and Donna Simpson and Josh Cunningham first came to Canada a year ago last January, played some wee showcases at the Folk Alliance convention in Vancouver - and immediately got hired to play practically every major summer festival in Canada last year. Everywhere they went, they stole the show, sold thousands of CDs, and made lasting friendships with audiences and fellow musicians alike. There isn't a group like them, and if you know an Australian, you'd better drag them to the show, playoffs or not. The Aussies hit the stage at 10.00 sharp; Luther Wright and his sidekicks will construct lots of their own material (and deconstruct Pink Floyd's The Wall) and generally have a fine time until the wee hours. Tickets are $10.00 in advance (call me at 416 351-1323 to reserve yours). I suppose I hope the Leafs and the Raptors win (no overtime, dammit!). Both requests ultimately resulted in paid bookings. My pocketbook certainly thanked Harry & Steve for their considerable efforts. But let's not forget the formidable & frenzied buzz that a win can produce. I'll never forget the afternoon the Canadian Men's team took home the gold this year. It was a Sunday afternoon game. I watched the big game's finale as I put my suit on for our matinee at the Cameron House. I had to leave the moment the game ended. Stepped outside to silence, rode a cab through deserted streets, and arrived to see my bandmates looking glum in an empty bar. "Oh man, it looks like we're in for a dead one today!" someone said (They weren't following the series, didn't know the Canadians had just won gold). I told them to wait about twenty minutes...then the streets went wild and the bar became packed to the rafters. It proved to be one of the most high-octane, celebratory gigs we've ever played. An historic moment, if you will. I guess it's all about timing, eh? I figure as long as the Leafs win Thursday night, and the game doesn't go into triple overtime, Luther & the Waifs might just get a big ole partying crowd out. Now if Toronto loses..... But if this play-off mania goes through to mid-June life ain't gonna get any easier in the music promotion game! It took him 178 weeks. Stan Rogers was the first - it >took him 158 weeks. All the performers on Richard's list do get significant folkdj-l airplay, with the exception of Murray McLauchlan. I don't believe much of Murray's music is available on CD which likely accounts for this. Performers like Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn and Joni Mitchell get lots of airplay on some mainstream commercial radio stations. James Keelaghan, along with the vast majority of other Canadian folkies, does not, and that's the whole point of these lists. So far as I'm aware, there's nowhere else to get information on airplay by Canadian folk performers, no matter how skimpy it may be in the overall airplay universe. I'm sure we all agree that most Canadian folk music is far beneath the radar when it comes to airplay or even awareness by the general public. In our own ways, we are all trying to change that a little bit. I continue to be very surprised how much Canadian music does show up on folkdj-l playlists. >And, yes, I KNOW Harry works hard to compile these "statistics" - >but I've never been able to figure why, or of what earthly value >they are, since we cannot compare them as a percentage of the total >music played, the vast majority of which will inevitably (and >probably rightly) be of American origin Folkdj-l playlists do not represent complete folk airplay, they represent those who report. Certainly no one has ever claimed this airplay accurately reflects or parallels "total" airplay in any way. Richard is correct that the vast majority of performers showing up on folkdj-l playlists are American. Harry Bryan acts as a filter to pull the Canadian names out of those lists, bless his heart and eyes. Would radio sampling by the PRO's, even if it were available, give us any useful information? Of course not, folk is invisible when it comes to overall airplay. I'm fairly sure Richard's attitude is not "and so it should be!" I don't understand why he would quibble at getting some folkie information. Richard and myself were two of 35 Canadian folkies who chose "The Albums of 2001" for the recent Penguin Eggs poll. Those 35 people did not judge the same albums, they tackled the project based on their own inclinations and exposure to music. The value of that poll to me, was to wave a flag over some CD's that had escaped my notice or that I hadn't got around to picking up. I trust the judgement of my peers. One of Richard's "discoveries" in that poll was Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. Each of Dave and Tracy's CD's have ranked near the top of overall annual folkdj-l stats for three years running. "When I Go" was #9 in 1999, "Tanglewood Tree" was #1 in 2000, "Drum, Hat Buddha" was #3 in 2001. I contacted Dave and Tracy and hired them for the Nickelodeon two years ago on the basis of their folkdj-l airplay. That's what "earthly value" these "irrelevant" stats have for me. I regard folkdj-l disc jockys as folk peers who like the music I like. Their playlists represent airplay "votes". When a new name shows up a lot, U.S. or Canadian, I take notice. Folkdj-l airplay has directly led me to hire Lynn Miles, Fred Eaglesmith, J.P. Cormier, April Verch, Aengus Finnan and Jory Nash among others. Would I have picked up on those performers eventually anyhow? Probably, but not as quickly. May 9th Time: 8pm Location: The Bellefair United Church, 2 Bellefair Ave. corner of Bellefair Ave. & Queen St. in the Beach, east end Toronto Admission: $15 Info: 416-264-2235 _______________________________________________________________ A little background: Pierre Schryer was raised in the rich Franco-Ontarian culture of a family whose name has become associated the world over with great traditional fiddle music. A gifted performer, he delights in playing and composing in a range of styles from Irish, Scottish and French-Canadian, to Canadian Old-Time and American Swing. Pierre's musical talents extend beyond his famous fiddling, to include mandolin, tenor banjo, and the unique French-Canadian foot percussion. During his years as a competitor, Pierre claimed numerous awards and titles, including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, Violonneux Championnat (Québec Fiddle Champion), and North American Irish Fiddle Champion (Fleadh Cheoil). In 1995, Pierre officially announced his retirement from the competition world of fiddling to enter full-time into the world of performing, gracing audiences everywhere with the virtuosic and energetic sound of his own group, The Pierre Schryer Band. The Pierre Schryer Band has gained critical acclaim across Canada, the United States, Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland, and have established themselves as one of Canada's most well respected traditional music ensembles. Their début album, "The New Canadian Waltz," was recorded live in 1995 and features Pierre's uncompromised fiddling dexterity, while offering authentic representation of traditional styles and innovative arrangements. Their latest recording "Acoustique!,"represents the evolution of the band, displaying a fresh and exciting sound that combines traditional fiddle styles with a touch of World Music, Celtic and Swing. Among the many highlights of Pierre Schryer's career is the 2000 CD release of "2 Worlds United" on the Claddagh Records label in Dublin (for worldwide distribution). This duet recording combines Pierre's skillful fiddling with the talents of button accordionist, Dermot Byrne, of the Irish super-group Altan. The result is a masterful combination of two celebrated musical traditions. The future of The Pierre Schryer Band is flourishing with exciting opportunities. The group continues to bring the enjoyment and enthusiasm of traditional music to audiences of all ages. Their energetic sound combined with Pierre's genuine warmth and flawless ability, is guaranteed to have toes tapping at every show! So Beachers, East-Enders, Torontonians, here's your chance to get those feet moving! Quotes: "Pierre is that rarity, the complete fiddler. He can do it all and do it outstandingly - Irish, Scottish, East Coast, Quebecois, Ontario - he knows no boundaries....when Pierre plays, you know what is meant by the "joy of music", it radiates from him and fills the audience." Warren Robinson, Artistic Director, Goderich Celtic Festival and President of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals "....the music felt it would live forever...the final chord made a lump in the throat rise up and squeeze on the tear ducts. No way was there not going to be encore after encore, and Pierre, seductive charmer, claimed the crowd's emotions..." Larry Winger, Music Reviewer, Allendale, England "Pierre is, as always, simply stunning. A one of a kind." The Woods Music & Dance Society, Lake Rosseau/Toronto, Ontario "Pierre's music lifts the heart with its precision and proud humour. It takes you expertly by the hand on a journey through the many accents in at the heart of the Canadian fiddle tradition." Micheal O Suilleabhain, Irish World Music Centre, Limerick University, Ireland ___________________________________________________ Nonie Crete: Nonie grew up in Penetanguishene, went to Humber College for music in Toronto and lived in Kitchener for a while where she performed in various bands and performed solo concerts. She loves the small town lifestyle of Fergus and resides there with her husband Peter and two children Andrew and Kathleen who you'll see perform with her often at her concerts. Nonie Crete has been a commanding and popular presence on the Ontario indie music scene since 1992. A natural storyteller and a prolific songwriter, Crete's heartfelt and evocative lyrics, her abundance of energy and vitality, her talents as a composer, guitarist and harmonica player, and her natural musical diversity has endeared her to audiences of all ages. Crete released her first indie recording, the cassette New Romance, in 1994. She followed it up with her first CD a year later - the critically acclaimed Maybe I'm a Loner - which has received considerable radio airplay on programs like CBC's Heartland. A cassette of a live recording - Live at Leyanders - featuring Crete anda collection of high-calibre musical friends, was released in 1997 by popular demand from her fans who wanted to hear more of Crete's new music backed up by a high-energy band.Crete has just released her fourth recording and second full-length CD - The River Grand. Named for the CD's title track - a stunning musical tribute to the Grand River - The River Grand features Crete's trademark blend of Celtic-folk-country -blues. This time around, however, Crete has recruited some musical heavyweights to help out. Featured on The River Grand are performances by: Ed Ringwald on peddle steel guitar, Ed Minevich on violin, Jeff Bird on mandolin, Glen Soulis on violin, penny whistle, flute and saxophone, James Anthony on bass and guitar, Gary Kreller on accordion, Bob Robb on banjo and mandolin, and Daisy DeBolt on back-up vocals. Soon after 'The River Grand' cd was completed, Nonie started on a Celtic cd project with Eugene O'Neil, an Irish immigrant friend she met at an Irish Pub and who was often seen performing with Nonie, singing his favorite Irish songs. Eugene had a real flare for words and poems and along with Crete's talent for melodies, together they put together eight of the eleven songs on the 'moonlight dreams' cd. The cd has taken Nonie to Ireland where she toured through Donegal, Dublin, Belfast andDerry. Nonie was asked to open a concert for Clannad and Altan and BBC has featured her cd as well as other Irish radio programs. From Ireland Nonie headed out west to Vancouver where she was featured at House Concerts and Folk Concerts. As Christmas 2001 was fast approaching Nonie Crete and Brenda Lewis collaborated on a Christmas/Chanukah cd called 'Holidays in Harmony. A beautiful collection of favorite Christmas songs and Yiddish songs of Brenda's heritage. Now Nonie is recording with Eugene Rea of Reastudios and will be out with a Irish Folk album with such favorites as 'Oh Danny Boy' and 'Come By the Hills'. In April Nonie starts a cd project with Paul Mills of Stan Rogers fame. Together they have co-written a couple of songs and it looks to be a wonderful cd with some of Nonie's most requested unrecorded songs and what Nonie feels is her best of songwriting efforts. (corner of Kingston Rd. & Warden Ave. in east end Toronto) Admission: $12 at the door Info: 416-264-2235 ______________________________________________________ A concert by Rick Fielding is something that we eagerly anticipate. We can always rely on his superb musicianship, his strong singing, his humour and his charming and easy audience rapport. What makes it extra special is the sense that anything can happen, and it usually does. Sometimes he will disregard his set list, if he even has one, and sing what seems appropriate at the time. Perhaps he will bring surprise guests on stage to accompany him, or get the audience involved in singing along (not that they need much encouragement). Whatever it is, you can be certain that it will be refreshing and entertaining. Rick is a 30 year folk music veteran, truly a consummate artist and a great crowd favourite at festivals and other folk venues. He possesses a vast repetoire of folk, blues, country, old-time, jazz and a good collection of obscure songs and he delivers them flawlessly, accompanying himself on guitar, banjo, mandolin, slide guitar or whatever suits the needs of the moment. Rick currently resides in Toronto, Ontario where he writes music, teaches acoustic techniques on guitar, banjo, mandolin and dulcimer, runs workshops on songwriting and professional development for musicians, does custom leather work, contributes to the Mudcat Cafe on the Internet and hosts the radio show Acoustic Workshop on CIUT-FM 89.5. This concert was originally billed as a CD release concert, but due to unforseen delays we are now calling it a CD preview. Rick is currently working on this CD, called "Kind Friends and Honoured Guests", as a followup to his two previous successful CDs, "Lifeline" and "This One's The Dreamer". Paul Mills (aka Curly Boy Stubbs), a brilliant guitarist, record producer and partner in the Borealis Record company will be opening for Rick (and there's a strong possibility that he'll also be called on to accompany Rick from time to time). Join us at Acoustic Harvest for an relaxed, comfortable and highly entertaining musical evening. We have some great new music to celebrate the season. Through a special agreement with A Major Label, Signature Sounds is proud to offer the new album by Fred Eaglesmith, Falling Stars and Broken Hearts. This new release is a burnished blend of alternative country and americana music from Eaglesmith. Long recognized as one of the finest songwriters in the alt. country scene, his songs have been recorded by Cowboy Junkies, Dar Williams, and most recently Kasey Chambers. His live performance have been compared to Steve Earle and Bruce Springsteen for the juxtapostion of manic energy and quiet intensity, humor and sadness. Falling Stars and Broken Hearts is Eaglesmith's eleventh album and his first studio album in three years. Sound clips are now available at www.signaturesounds.com Also on sale now is the newly reissued debut by Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, When I Go. If this recording contained only the brooding and breathtaking epic title track, it would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Dave Carter is a songwriter with few peers. As luck would have it, there are nine other gems on this debut recording and each as singularly masterful as the title track. From delicate ballads like "Kate and the Ghost of Lost Love," to the foot-stomping, frenzied wordplay of "Little Liza Jane," Carter's muse is embellished perfectly with Tracy Grammer's gorgeous harmonies, violin, and mandolin lines. This new re-issue features a booklet with printed lyrics, new photos and an essay on the making of the album by Tracy Grammer. This summer look for new albums on Signature by Mary Gauthier and Peter Mulvey as well as a new Signature sampler disc. www.signaturesounds.com Jim Olsen Signature Sounds Recordings PO Box 106 Whately, MA 01093 (p) 413 665-4036 (f) 509 691 0457 jim@signaturesounds.com http://www.signaturesounds.com - To unsubscribe: mail majordomo@icomm.ca with "unsubscribe maplepost" in the body (not the subject line) Need help? mail owner-maplepost@icomm.ca From kelly.hood@sympatico.ca Thu May 2 12:14:14 2002 Date: Thu May 2 12:14:14 2002 From: Kelly Hood kelly.hood@sympatico.ca Subject: [mplpost] Hayes and Cahill This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_004F_01C1F1D1.8A325DA0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Irish Folk Virtuosos Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill Debut in Toronto Mother's Day, Sunday May 12th. May 16th Time: 8pm Location: Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. W., 1/2 block south of Bloor-Toronto For dinner/show reservations call: 416-531-6604 Admission: $12adv/$15 Info: 416-264-2235 _________________________________________________________ A little background: Their much anticipated new CD, "Away", officially due out next Fall, but available at this concert, is a beautiful masterpiece. Along with their trademark harmony singing, the Laws take their listeners on a musical journey from a bar stool to a raging river, hitting the road, heartache, the pain of separation and the joy of being in love (which they are). Soon to be relocating back to Ontario from Saltspring Island, BC, The Laws are John and Michele, husband-and-wife acoustic songwriting duo, performing original music that crosses the boundaries of country, bluegrass and folk. Known for their "tight-as-a-glove" harmony singing, John and Michele's vocal harmonies are exquisite and exciting, their solos powerful at times, angelic at others. With John on lead guitar and mandolin and Michele on rhythm guitar and bass, their instrumental work is flawless and inventive. They have received rave reviews for their debut CD, "Estimated Time of Revival". This collection of finely crafted songs, delivered with their stellar harmonies has drawn comparisons to Alison Kraus and Gram Parsons. Their songs are pure and simple, with bare-bones arrangements that give room to the stories they tell. Indeed, their tremendous musicianship, bluegrasss-tinged "heartland" songs, and warm stage presence win over audiences at every show, and continue to gain them an enthusiastic and growing following. With musical influences ranging from Johnny Cash and Roger Miller to Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams, they bring a traditional, pure sensibility to their infectious songs. You only have to hear these tunes once and you'll be humming them for a long time. Quotes: "John and Michele Law's songs seem to be the lost essence of bluegrass and country music which has now become so commercial and formulaic sounding." Randy Bachman "The Laws were sensational" Keith Preston, Victor Harbor Folk Festival, Australia "The harmonies between John and Michele melt into each other, and their lyrics ring with sincerity." The National Post, ON "After listening to the Laws sing "Willow and Dove", it's a shock to look at the liner notes and discover that the tune was written by the duo themselves and not A.P. Carter or Ralph Stanley." Ron Forbes-Roberts, Monday Magazine, BC "South Australian audiences can't get enough of The Laws. Australians are seeing some high quality acts coming out of Canada these days and the The Laws are not exception, in fact, they'd have to be pretty close to the pick of the bunch!" Peter Thornton, South Coast Folk Club, Australia "....with splendid inter-woven harmonies and voices and instruments that are so in tune with each other, one is reminded of the greatest masterpieces that have taken years and patience and dedication to bring to fruition."
