Caravan World Rhythms and the Roundhouse Community Centre Present
March 9, 2002 at the Roundhouse Community Centre (Davie at Pacific, Vancouver)

Melodies from Brazil and China, featuring musicians Celso Machado (Brazil), 
Qiu-Xia He (China), and Andre Thibeault (Canada), well-known and 
well-traveled artists from the Vancouver area. Steeped in their respective 
cultural traditions, Celso, Qiu-Xia and Andre also have a rich history of 
cross-cultural collaboration. Our first Mondo Music session will be 
celebrated with a Samba procession led by Terry Hunter and the Vancouver 
World Rhythms Youth Ensemble.
Tickets $2-10 (pay-what-you-can)

MONDO MUSIC is an ongoing Roundhouse series bringing musical traditions of 
the world to our community. Musicians from various cultures demonstrate 
their musical skills, while using the language of music as a model for open 
dialogue. Join us for this Saturday afternoon music project!

Renowned Spanish flamenco choreographer Joqauin Ruiz brings his latest 
creation to Vancouver. The show, Mar de Tierras sails around the 
Mediterranean, exploring its rich cultural traditions and recreating them 
through music, song, and dance in a dynamic and authentic Flamenco concert. 
Joaquin Ruiz has assembled an all-star musical cast of Cantaores (flamenco 
singers) and skilled musicians who combine the classical sounds of flamenco 
guitars with other rich instruments from around the Mediterranean rim, such 
as the cajon, derbuka, bouzouki and accordion.

Zrihan, dubbed "the voice of the mockingbird," unleashes searing, 
fantastically ornamented vocals, expressing the emotional intensity and 
vivacity of North African, Andalusian, and Sephardic songs. Moroccan-born 
Emil Zrihan is acknowledged as one of the finest countertenors in the world.

Oliver Mtukudzi is the best-selling artist in his home country of Zimbabwe, 
Africa. He has been performing for over twenty years, and has produced over 
forty recordings. While Oliver's music is undeniably contagious, it is his 
lyrics that have captured the hearts of his people, and his fans 
world-wide. Most of his songs focus on the social and economic issues that 
govern people's daily lives and, with an infectious sense of humour and 
optimism that prevails through all his music, his appeal extends to young 
and old alike.
