Huge kudos to the artists for actually starting at the advertised start-time (this is a big complaint with us - few musicians seem to be able to get going at the advertised time), and to the club for having a nice early start time. Watching these guys in action is a show in itself, they joke around and obviously have a lot of fun playing. Ron Davis on piano is always a treat, but there is a special chemistry between Ron and his two partners in this trio. Ron shows an entirely new side to his playing. The bass playing skills of Ka-Cheung Liu are truly outstanding, and he has a beautiful voice which he uses to scat along with many of the numbers. Great bass solos. Tony Quarrington plays the guitar with a smooth and practiced ease and wearing a big happy expression on his face all the time. His guitar solos were delightful, never over the top and he delighted in throwing in little surprises. The material they played was light-hearted and fun. By the time we left (just after the first set) the joint was really jumping. Swing Street is one trio we will definitely be looking to hear again. NorthernBlues Music is proud to announce the release of two new terrific CDs -- 'Respect the Dead' by Otis Taylor, and 'Wise and Otherwise' by Harry Manx. Both CDs will be available in stores tomorrow, April 2nd. Otis Taylor's 'Respect the Dead' continues where his critically-acclaimed White African left off. Another set of 12 hard-hitting original songs (thought slightly more reflective in tone). Otis's daughter Cassie provides background vocals on several tracks, and once gain, Kenny Passarelli has produced another incredible-sounding CD. Already Respect The Dead is garnering incredible reviews. The Ottawa Citizen recently gave it a 5-star review. Here is what the All-Music Guide said: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Ag1220r6ai48x "Otis Taylor might well be the best and most inspired of contemporary bluesmen. His White African album was a masterpiece — which makes the task of following it doubly difficult. With Respect the Dead, however, he does a superb job — the man is still very much on a roll. Kicking off with the stark, banjo-led "Ten Million Slaves," the intensity level never dips. It doesn't matter whether he's basing a song around a single chord, as he does on "Hands on Your Stomach," or simply using voice and harmonica on "Baby So," there's a remarkable urgency about his singing and lyrics, never more so than with "Black Witch," a tale of the American South that goes right back to Africa — but the album returns and takes its tone to Mexico and racing for "Three Stripes on a Cadillac." The support, from Kenny Passarelli, Cassie Taylor, and atmospheric lead guitarist Eddie Turner, always serves to push the tension of the songs even higher. Taylor doesn't work within standard blues structures, and his lyrics stray far from the standard blues lines to encompass history and mythology. Where others seem content with the established limits, Taylor is pushing them further and further — and in doing so, he's making some of the most exciting music around." A unique artist, Harry Manx has brought the sounds of India to the Blues. Combining lap-slide guitar and the blues with the Mohan Veena (a 20-string member of the guitar family created and named by Indian musical guru Vishwa Mohan Bhatt) and his own distinctive vocals, Manx creates a new musical experience. His brand new album, Wise and Otherwise, released April 2nd, 2002 on Northern Blues Music, has been garnering positive attention across the country. His first Canadian CD entitled Dog My Cat, released in 2001, produced by Jordy Sharpe at the Barn Studios in Salt Spring Island, BC, enjoyed rave reviews and won an “Indie” award for Blues Album of the Year at Canadian Music Week this year. Here is what the All-Music Guide said about 'Wise and Otherwise': http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A9n0xlfwe0cqr To call Harry Manx a wizard of slide guitar is perfectly true, but not the whole story. Add banjo, harmonica, and the Indian veena to that, and you're approaching the real story. On Wise and Otherwise he demonstrates the full range of his talents, which are firmly based in the blues, but extend far beyond — all the way to Indian music, with his own "Raga Nat Bhariav," a short, but beautiful journey for the veena. As a writer he continues to improve by leaps and bounds, making songs like "Roses Given" fit well with his version of "Death Have Mercy" or his covers of "Crazy Love" and "Foxy Lady" (where his acoustic playing has all the intensity of an electric Hendrix). In some ways he mines similar territory to Kelly Joe Phelps, but by now Manx is assured enough in himself to have a remarkably distinctive sound that comes not from the Delta, but some mystic place beyond. "Coat of Mail," for example, is hardly a traditional blues, but its feeling runs somewhere deep, from some primal river. Amazingly, he even manages to make B.B. King's classic, "The Thrill Is Gone," into his own — no mean feat. There are few performers like this around who can connect the dots between musical styles with such resonance and make themselves seem a part of them all. — Chris Nickson Fred Litwin NorthernBlues Music, Inc. 225 Sterling Road, Unit 19 Toronto, Ontario M6R 2B2 (416) 536-4892 FAX: (416) 536-1494 www.northernblues.com - To unsubscribe: mail majordomo@icomm.ca with "unsubscribe maplepost" in the body (not the subject line) Need help? mail owner-maplepost@icomm.ca From rflohil@sympatico.ca Mon Apr 1 19:44:32 2002 Date: Mon Apr 1 19:44:32 2002 From: Richard Flohil rflohil@sympatico.ca Subject: [mplpost] Stony Plain Newsletter #13 (no jokes, no typos) Stony Plain's E-Mail Newsletter Issue 13 (April 1/2002) ___________________________________________________________________ Phew! It's April Fool's Day, but there are no intentional jokes here - just the news, folk, including (at the end) the most important news of all: Stony Plain now has an American distributor! There's a HUGE sigh of relief around here, let us tell you! ____________________________________________________________________ IN THIS ISSUE: 1) Quick notes: Maria Muldaur, Mike McCartney, Jim Brynes, Amos Garrett and Vancouver's Storman Norman 2) Long John sets off for major UK tour 3) Sonny Rhodes packs up his turban 4) Words of wisdom from Ian Tyson 5) Navarre now distributes Stony Plain in the United States 6) Keeping in touch with Stony Plain ____________________________________________________________________ 1) QUICK NOTES ABOUT MIKE McCARTNEY, MARIA MULDAUR, JIM BRYNES, VANCOUVER'S STORMAN NORMAN, AND AMOS GARRETT * Stony Plain is one of the sponsors of "Mike McCartney's Liverpool" - a stunning recollection of his hometown by the award-winning photographer, the one-time leader of the British band The Scaffold, and the author of a number of books, including a children's book written with his younger ("and more handsome" he insists) brother. The exhibit is running April 2-May 12 at the Provincial Museum of Alberta in Edmonton, and on April 3 Petersen hosts a live story-swap with McCartney and Long John Baldry, both of whom have tales to tell of the fabled birthplace of British rock. * Well, no, Maria Muldaur did not win a Grammy for her wonderful "Richland Woman Blues" (Stony Plain SPCD-1270). Sad though everyone was, it's a pleasure to offer congratulations of Jimmie Vaughan, who was the winner for Best Traditional Blues Album. However, "Richland Woman Blues" did win Maria an AFIM (Association for Independent Music) Award, and the honour from the indie segment of the industry did soften the blow a little. And Maria will be at the W.C. Handy Awards in Memphis May 23; she's up for two nominations, and we're keeping our fingers crossed. * Stony Plain's Jim Brynes plays on two tracks on "Live at the Yale," a new CD released to mark the 10th anniversary of Storman Norman's Sunday Blues show on Vancouver's Classic Rock 101. Norman's been a great blues supporter in the city; the record (with a profits to charity) is a fine live concert, recorded last year. More details on Norman's website is www.sundayblues.com * Amos Garrett sets off for two weeks of dates in the UK, starting May 15 and ending on June 2. And plans are in the works for a return trip to Ontario (with some Quebec dates, hopefully) starting October 10. Any interested promoters out there should contact rflohil@sympatico.ca Š _____________________________________________________________ 2) LONG JOHN BALDRY HEADS OFF TO U.K. FOR MAJOR TOUR Long John Baldry leaves for a major 38-city tour in his native Britain starting on April 30 and ending June 15. He's special guest on the bill with The Manfreds (former members of Manfred's Mann's group) who include Paul Jones, Mike D'Abo, Tom McGuinness and Mike Hugg and classic UK rockers Chris Farlow and Colin Blunstone. Most of the dates are in England, including a June 9 appearance at the London Palladium (where John has played, in the past, at Royal Command performances), but there are three dates in Wales, and one in Scotland at Glasow's Royal Concert Hall. _____________________________________________________________ 3) SONNY RHODES PACKS UP HIS TURBAN For more than 30 years, Stony Plain artist Sonny Rhodes - King of the Lap Steel Guitar and perennial W.C. Handy Award nominee - had worn a turban on stage. "I got the idea from Chuck Willis, and after he passed on, I kept the tradition alive." Now, however, as a bizarre result of the tragedies of September 11, he's put the turban away. "Man, I got threatened three times - once in Edmonton and once by a guy who had a pistol on him," he said. "They said that wearing a turban was showing respect for terrorists, and they were offended by it. I never heard so much nonsense in my life, but all I need is some crazy s.o.b. with a gun taking things out on me, and I'm not taking any risks." Fans will be delighted that his famous red suit is still part of Sonny's formal stage gear. And he has a VERY snazzy new black cowboy hat to finish off the ensemble. ______________________________________________________________ 4) WORDS OF WISDOM FROM IAN TYSON Quoted in a major feature in The National Post by Bob Remington, Ian Tyson had plenty to say about recording "Live at Longview" (Stony Plain SPCD-1282)" "I've never done a live album (before). It's a high wire act. I thought we might pull this off if I don't have a cardiac arrest on Thursday or something. When I cut my longhorn bull out of a steel feeder with a hacksaw and managed not to have a cardiac, I figured my heart was pretty sound - that was a real adventure. But a live album? We had to know (those songs) backwards, and in the end I knew more about those songs vocally and certainly on guitar than any album I've done in years. "I've tried to write formula stuff at various times in my life, and I've been monumentally unsuccessful at itŠ.I was more interested in chasing cattle and being a good cutting horse trainer." _________________________________________________________________ 5) NAVARRE NOW DISTRIBUTES STONY PLAIN IN U.S. Stony Plain Records are now being distributed in the United States - the world's largest market - by Navarre Corporation, based in New Hope, Minnesota, just outside Minneapolis. The company is one of the largest independent distributors in the United States, and has 18 regional sales representatives. Some of its key people are already familiar with Stony Plain, having previously worked with Stony Plain's former distributor, Valley/DNA, which declared bankruptcy last fall. In addition to Stony Plain, Navarre has recently signed similar agreements with a number of other important indie record labels based in Britain and the U.S. Two new Stony Plain releases - "Remembering Leadbelly", by Vancouver-based singer Long John Baldry and "Living the Blues" by Duke Robillard - will be released in the United States on May 21; some 50 other albums in the label's back catalogue have also been made available and are now being marketed by Navarre's field staff. In Canada, Stony Plain's releases continue to be distributed by our friends at Warner Music Canada. Formed in 1967, they revolutionized folk music with their album Liege And Lief and almost singlehandedly created the genre of folk-rock. Their ever-evolving line-up has included such luminaries as Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick and Sandy Denny. As of this year, Fairport Convention has been entertaining audiences around the globe for thirty five years. Dirty Linen calls them “the band that invented English folk-rock” and The Boston Phoenix says “Fairport Convention were the first important British folk rock band.” The musicians involved have always been unique in their revolutionary embrace of traditional British elements, richly evocative songwriting and uncanny interplay of the band’s many vocalists... More information: ______________________________________________________________________ Thu Apr 4 - Anne Lindsay CD Release - "Eavesdropping" 8:30pm, $15 “Anne Lindsay cut the night air with a brilliant fiddle solo that proved to be one-third Ashley MacIsaac and two-thirds Jimi-Hendrix.” -Jeff Macklin, Peterborough Examiner “Ottawa audiences were taken with Lindsay’s fiddling, rising to their feet almost every time she put bow to string.” -Dan Donovan, Ottawa Life Anne Lindsay's been eavesdropping. For most of her life, the Toronto violinist - or is she a fiddler? -- has been listening in on other people's musical conversations, absorbing an enormous variety of ideas, idioms, dialects, patterns, rhythms and melodies. Recorded in Toronto, "Eavesdropping" contains 13 original tunes that showcase Anne's hybrid style -- neither violin nor fiddle, but a confident blend of both disciplines. The funky, fiddle-driven tracks combine strong melodies and complex rhythms with a rootsy approach to stretching musical boundaries. Anne has performed on concert, club and festival stages and in countless studio sessions with artists including John McDermott, Jim Cuddy, Blue Rodeo, Natalie McMaster, The Chieftains, Led Zeppelin, Oliver Schroer, Oh Susanna, Beyond The Pale, Heartwood, The Calore Trio, David Woodhead, and in the hit stage musical, Stan Rogers: A Matter Of Heart! Anne also regularly plays (fiddle!) for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Don't miss this exclusive performance of one of Canada's finest musicians, with very special guests to make this fabulous evening a night to remember: Colleen Allen - saxophone Bill Brennan - keyboards and percussion Al Cross - drums Jason Fowler - guitar David Woodhead - fretless bass, guitar, mandola Tosh Weyman - saxophone More information & soundbytes at: ! ____________________________________________________________________ Fri Apr 5 - Entourloupe 8:30pm, $12adv/$14 Entourloupe is not a household name in Toronto. And that's the city's loss - for this four-man Quebec band IS a household name 350 miles down the 401. The quartet is a veteran on the folk festival circuit, from Lunenberg NS to Salmon Arm BC, not to mention similar events in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Yellowknife, Brittany, Randolph Vermont and Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Now the band's set for a rare Toronto appearance here on Friday. Expect an irresistible, breakneck brand of fiddle and accordion-driven dance music, complete with virtuoso playing and staggeringly good step-dancing. In short, this is Quebec music played with flair and energy and passion, and a joie de vivre that's hard to find in this busy city. Check out for for more info & an interview on Cate Friesen's Roots Report. ____________________________________________________________________ Sat/Sun Apr 6/7 - Tom Rush 8:30pm, $20adv/$22.50 Tom Rush is a gifted musician and performer, whose shows offer a musical celebration...a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become. His distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues. Rush's impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the '60s and the renaissance of the '80s and '90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, "Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences." ... The Globe and Mail February 24, 1954 Dear Mr. Jackson: In the year that we have been running the Saturday feature page I have never had so many warm comments as have come to me in reference to your remininscences of Drumsnab. Most of these, of course, have been verbal and I can't very well pass them along to you. You will, however, see a very nice note from Miss Dorothea Snider which I have acknowledged. A Miss MacDonald, who lives in Rosedale, phoned last night expressing delight with the piece and hoping we could have from your pen. MIss Lotta Dempsey, one of our columnists, admitted to me that she read the aticle at breakfast and burst into tears to the surprise and dismay of her husband. Several others have told me how moved they were. Believe me, Mr. Jackson, we at The Globe and Mail all feel that we have been able to present to our readers a little gem of philosophy which I am sure has gien hundreds of people a little lift, a clean, refreshing literary experience. Perhaps you will write for us again. I hope so. The small cheque which will be forthcoming to you in no way represents the value and appeal of your article. (BROADVIEW AVE.) 9:30 P.M. $5.00 THURSDAY APRIL 4, 2002 The Silver Hearts First, a big thank you to everyone who made the first month of the East Of The Valley series such a great success! We have more great performances comin’ up this month, starting off April with a bang, we’re pleased to play host to The Silver Hearts. After a successful opening slot with Eleni Mandell at The Rivoli just last week, The Silverhearts are makin waves all over. The Silver Hearts (http://www.thesilverhearts.com) A mixture of western roots, ragtime and bluegrass that has been described at various times as a "beer orchestra", "ghost town western music", "music for an Irish wake" and "old-time hopped-up playing", The Silver Hearts take forgotten music and reinvent it with a new sense of style and vitality. Tim Perlich of Now Magazine wrote in the March 28- April 3, 2002 issue: "Their tunes might recall something by a wine-whipped country string band…one moment and then a bluesy-woozy outtake from Tom Waits’ Bone Machine the next, and they have no qualms about wailing a teary ballad at the drop of a Stetson." "Silver Hearts don’t need to wear tin sheriff’s deputy badges to set themselves apart. When you travel in a 14-strong posse dressed in matching black suits, you tend to stand out in a crowd" This is definitely going to be a great night, it will surely give anyone a reason to travel East Of The Valley! Folks such as Ian Tamblyn, Lynn Miles, Cathy Miller, and Alex Sinclair created an informal mutual support group for songwriters resulting in a number of projects, two of which were recorded an aired by CBC. The SongAlong was continued by Karen Leslie Hall who attempted to make it a cross Canada event. Ottawa has held firm though most, if not all of the rest of Canada dropped off. The 2002 Song Along is underway this weekend. The challenge was to take one of 5 themes, write a song on that theme and present it live in front of peers. This year 42 Ottawa singer/songwriters will be performing their created work (and one other) over three nights. The nights will be recorded by Dann Webb and will be condensed into a CD. The nights look as if they will be sold out, so this is not a call for submissions or even for attendance, but rather a teaser for others to get involved in their own communities. The Silver Hearts (http://www.thesilverhearts.com) that western roots and tin pan alley big band return to Toronto:

THURSDAY, APRIL 4TH at the Black Swan
FRIDAY, APRIL 5TH at the Cadillac Lounge

and if you're in the Southwest catch us in St. Catherines:
SATURDAY, APRIL 6TH at the Merchant Ale House

A mixture of western roots, ragtime and bluegrass that has been described at various times as a "beer orchestra", "ghost town western music", "music for an Irish wake" and "old-time hopped-up playing", The Silver Hearts take forgotten music and reinvent it with a new sense of style and vitality.

Tim Perlich of Now Magazine wrote in the March 28- April 3, 2002 issue:
"Their tunes might recall something by a wine-whipped country string band…one moment and then a bluesy-woozy outtake from Tom Waits’ Bone Machine the next, and they have no qualms about wailing a teary ballad at the drop of a Stetson."

"Silver Hearts don’t need to wear tin sheriff’s deputy badges to set themselves apart. When you travel in a 14-strong posse dressed in matching black suits, you tend to stand out in a crowd"

This is definitely going to be a great night, it will surely give anyone a reason to travel East Of The Valley!

May 5. The event is being arranged by ArtsCan Circle; the organization came together when its members heard of the work of Mike Stevens, a Sarnia-based harmonica virtuoso, who has been visiting remote communities, playing for kids in schools, in community halls, and in the bush. It should be emphasized that the musicians conduct workshops, bringing donated instruments for the kids to learn - "The idea," says Stevens, "is to let them understand how music be an emotional outlet of expression in places where solvent sniffing has become the outlet of choice for so many. "These are good, sharp, bright kids, but their lives are dominated by extreme poverty, severe family dysfunction, lack of work and lack of hope." The Hugh's Room benefit will feature Stevens and his regular accompanist - Nashville based Raymond McLain - and will be hosted by Duke Redbird and performers Tamara Podemski and Jani Lauzon. Also taking part are a number of native and non-native artists (in alphabetical order): The Arrogant Worms Cindy Church Willie Dunn The Eagleheart Singers with Jimmy Dick Marie-Lynn Hammond Tim Harrison Molly Johnson Rob Lamothe and Lisa Winn Elder Lillian McGregor Don Ross Sistah Lois Tickets for the 7.30 p.m. Sunday May 5 show at Hugh's Room (2261 Dundas St. W, Toronto) are $25.00; reservations and ticket orders can be made by calling Hugh's Room at 416 531-6604. Initially, ArtsCan Circle will fund a pilot project in Labrador, but it is hoped that other musicians will take part in similar programmes in other remote parts of northern Canada. Her appearance at Hugh's Room is a "make-up date" for the concert she was forced to cancel last year because of the events in the United States last September. One of the few singers in her genre who plays piano as well as guitar, her concerts feature an eclectic mix of songs with elements of jazz, classic pop material from the past, and thoroughly contemporary storytelling. Josh White Jr., son of the legendary blues singer, and a long-time figure on the American folk scene, will make his first appearance in the city in many years; when he was a child in the '60s he appeared here on numerous occasions with his father. Other singer/songwriter's performing in this annual concert include Guelph's Stephen Fearing and rising star Aengus Finnan, who is also from Guelph. Rogers has released nine highly-acclaimed CD's to date with his most recent being Firefly (2001). His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and reveals a deep purpose. Cinematic in detail, his songs "give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart." An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over the top humor and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again. The Boston Globe has written that Rogers is, "A brilliant songwriter. One of the major talents of our time." Garnet has been the featured performer on numerous television and radio programs, including Much Music, The Country Beat, Listen Up, Gabereau, Morningside, Mountain Stage and All Things Considered. He has been a headliner at concert venues and festivals such as Wolf Trap, Lincoln Centre and Art Park, sharing the stage with performers such as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Billy Bragg, Bill Monroe, Ferron, and Guy Clark. Guelph's outstanding guitarist and Juno-award winning singer/songwriter Stephen Fearing, who is touring to promote his latest CD, That's How I Walk, will also be making his first Kitchener appearance in over five years. Based for many years in Vancouver, Fearing moved to Guelph some years ago. His songwriting draws on numerous musical influences including contemporary acoustic, traditional folk, Celtic, Country, Blues, Gospel and Jazz. His stunning guitar playing and picking abilities are more than evident on an intricate and innovative instrumental track like Robert's Waterloo. Couple this with a smooth intimate voice that can project sudden power on a poignant, beautiful love song like Coryanna, and it's not hard to fathom why Stephen Fearing has established himself as one of Canada's most important singer/songwriters. Fearing is also a founding member of the folk/roots group Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, a project that combined his talents with two other exceptional Canadian artists; Colin Linden and Tom Wilson. Their 1996 debut, High Or Hurtin', received critical acclaim across Canada and was nominated for "Best Roots & Traditional Group" at the '97 JUNO's. The group's sensational follow up disc, Kings Of Love, released in the fall of '98, scored Stephen & the gang the JUNO for that category in 1999. The third member of this year's Songwriter's Circle is the outstanding up-and-coming artist, Aengus Finnan. Born to a performing family in Dublin, Ireland, Aengus has been immersed in story, song, and theatre all his life. His family immigrated to Canada when he was 4 and settled in Shelter Valley, Ontario, where they established an organic vegetable farm run on wind and solar power. Finnan's debut CD, "Fool's Gold," was supported by the Ontario Arts Council and was recorded by acclaimed producer Paul Mills (who worked extensively with Stan Rogers). The recording is a collection of stunning original works and vibrant renditions of traditional songs and was recently nominated "Folk/Roots Album of the Year" by Canada Music Week. The Centre In The Square's On Stage Series is a warm, moving and utterly unique experience. This season, once again, the audience will share the stage in an intimate setting along with the performers. With the capacity of the setting limited to only 225 tickets, the audience sits close to the performer(s) at tables set up on the theatre's stage. Reminiscent of experiencing these fine performers in the intimacy of one's living room, the unique experience of these performances is not to be missed. The KW Record's reporter Robert Reid has praised this series and the intimate setting. Reid has written in the KW Record that, "there's no better place anywhere in the area to hear singer-songwriters than on stage at Centre in the Square. The audience is close to the artists and the sound is excellent. Moreover, there are no extraneous noises or distractions of any kind. In short, nothing comes between the audience and the song." The Songwriter's Circle concert takes place on Thursday June 6th at 8pm. Ticket prices for the show are $25 each. To me, good music and "competition" are not about the same things at all (especially folk music!). What a pity the rest of Canada didn't keep the idea up. We had a similar thing at our major folk festival here about twelve years ago. Someone came up with an arbitrary line - "Mary gave a small sigh" - and the songwriters had to write a song where that line appeared somewhere in it. The songs were then performed in a songwriting workshop at the festival. Some very interesting songs came out of that - all with different themes, too. The professional edge with which Erin creates her captivating music was acquired through her 3 years of classical piano study at Cambrian College in Sudbury. In Summer of 2001, Erin felt she was ready to begin recording a solo album of her own original material. The self-titled album includes material spanning her nearly ten year effort at the craft of songwriting. The recording process took place at locations both in Sudbury as well as far across the length of Ontario in Windsor. Erin Gignac will be celebrating the release of her self-titled debut recording with a performance at the Tin Pan Alley (2177 LaSalle, 525-0123) on Saturday, April 13th. The party continues on Sunday, April 14th when Erin and special guests Allison Brown and Pierre LaFramboise will perform at the Townehouse tavern (206 Elgin, 674-6883). Guests will have the special opportunity at both events to pre-order Erin’s CD for $12.00 (Shipping FREE of charge!). There will be no cover charge for either concert; both beginning at approximately 9 o’clock pm. Originally from Belle River, Ontario, Erin was a part of several ensembles while in Sudbury; the Cambrian Jazz Ensemble, “The Vintage Plague”, and several other duos and groups. Some of Erin’s highlighting performances were at the Sudbury Summerfest for Muscular Dystrophy, the MCTV Christmas Telethon, Sudbury’s Townehouse, The Harrington MusicFest and her special guest appearance with Canadian duo, The Wild Strawberries. Erin has also performed in several Windsor area venues such as the Lift Lounge, Beatniks, and at Windsor Folk events. Folksinger Allison Brown’s engaging and eclectic performance invites each member of her audience on a journey though a wide range of human emotions and experiences. As an excellent interpreter of folk and roots music, she treads the thin lines between folk, pop, and country with a diverse repertoire of both traditional and original songs. Allison plays guitar along with her smooth vocals, delivered with the honest intensity of an authentic storyteller. At 24, with over ten years of performance experience, Allison’s confident stage savvy is evident whether in an intimate coffeehouse or in a raucous nightclub atmosphere. Musician and songwriter Pierre LaFramboise regularly entertains at the Tin Pan Alley, the Townehouse as well as many other Sudbury venues and events. Influenced by artists such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Gordon Lightfoot, Pierre’s reflective songwriting tackles real-life, universal issues facing the human spirit. Pierre completed 3 years of classical piano training at Cambrian College and has also produced several independent recordings at his own recording studio. Small world, huh? ************************************************************************ Lynn Harrison - A force to be reckoned with! With the release of her first cd "Lynoleum" in 2001, Lynn Harrison has transformed a private passion into a promising career. A joyful performer and award-winning songwriter, Harrison entered the professional music scene following several years as a television screenwriter. Born in Dallas TX and raised in Winnipeg, Harrison’s first songwriting memories go back as far as grade one. Years later, as a writer for CBC’s "Sesame Street", she found writing songs easier than writing scripts. In 2000, with the strong encouragement of Toronto jazz singer Rita di Ghent and bassist/producer David Woodhead, Lynn recorded "Lynoleum", a collection that combines elements of folk, pop and country but is all uniquely "Lynn. In less than one year since "Lynoleum"s release in February 2001, it has generated considerable attention. "Room to Love" was named Runner-Up in the Ontario Council of Folk Festival’s "Songs From the Heart" Contest. "Einstein’s Brain" is a winner of the international Songs Inspired by Literature (SIBL) event. More than half of the songs from "Lynoleum" have received airplay on CBC Radio One or college radio. "You Don’t Say" has made it into rotation at 12 commercial country stations. The album was featured in “Canadian House and Home” magazine as ideal “around-the-house” listening music. Most important to Harrison, however, her songs have found their way into the hearts of listeners around the world, both through her recording and her many live performances. After seeing Lynn in performance in late 2001, singer Anne Forsythe writes "Lynn’s songs are stories that feed the soul". Mike Stevens from Ontario writes "I can't remember when I've heard a more beautiful voice. I listen to your CD and drift off to that peaceful place where love is all that matters". Columnist and Global TV personality Charles Adler writes "She awed the crowd...Harrison’s music is not only easy to listen to, it stimulates thought." A singer who connects with audiences of all ages, Lynn’s 2001 performance schedule has taken her to Winnipeg, Buffalo, London and Barrie in addition to stages near her Toronto home. Prominently featured on the benefit cd "Tears of a Thousand Years" to raise funds for the victims of September 11th, Lynn performed to a concert crowd of 300 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Her music reflects a commitment to social justice and her belief that music can make a positive difference in the world. A mother of two, she brings music into the classroom and to the community through her “Lullaby Chorus” and “Writing Songs by Heart” singing and songwriting workshops. With recent television appearances in Toronto and London as well as radio performances in Winnipeg and Hamilton, she feels as comfortable in the studio as on the stage. Lynn is now working on a second album, due for release in 2003, enlisting the talents of David Woodhead, Ray Montford, Al Cross and many other musical friends. ************************************************************************ May the force be with you in April! Someone came up with an arbitrary line - "Mary gave a small sigh" - and the songwriters had to write a song where that line appeared somewhere in it. The songs were then performed in a songwriting workshop at the festival. Some very interesting songs came out of that - all with different themes, too. **Hey Kath... I belong to an email list where we have dedicated 3 albums of material (some of the artist's whose fan email group we are a part of and some of our own songs) for the artists birthday. All were kept within the group tself and copies were distributed to only the participants (Participants could contribute a song or a greeting to be mixed into one track with other greetings and music behind them) What if we took that idea to the songwriters in this group?? Out of 400 list members, I imagine that very many of the maplefolkies are songwriters. Imagine how many takes on a theme you could get doing this kind of thing. I went to the last one, and I'm getting too old for this sort of thing. I think it was $60 last year, and less than that for the first one. It entails standing around in the hot sun all day, and then all night, unless you want to sit on the baseball diamond outfield. Sound quality is best described as the occasional distant thump and roar over the crowd noise. Bring a blanket or a chair, but you'll have to stand to see the stage. Bring binoculars too because that stage is WAY far away. The beer tent has BOTH kinds of beer, Coors Light AND Blue. The drinking compound is fenced off at the back of the enclosure and it's awash in mud, plastic cups, puke, garbage and comatose teens by the end of the night. This venue is more suited to bands like April Wine or Teenage Head than bands that have some subtlety in the music. But it's GREAT if you're looking for a teenage beer drinking par-tay! Go to Summerfolk the weekend before instead. There, I've now officially become an "old-fart". And, yes, because of the silly quiz thingummy that Michael Wrycraft and I do, I get to do all of that at Summerfolk the weekend before as well! Life, as they say, is grand!! Of course Watershed isn't for everyone. Certainly not for Steve, or, perhaps, anyone who has long since celebrated their 25th birthday. Probably not for most MaplePost readers. As for me, at a pensionable age, I get paid to promote Watershed, I enjoy the day very much, and my body can still hold up as I patrol the site, hang backstage, and watch at least some of most of the acts' performances But Watershed II did have a paid attendance of 16,000 last year, and it's way past 18,000 so far for this year, and it's not going to happen til Sept. 1. It's obviously meeting some sort of demand, people obviously like the "group experience" (with all that music thumping away!), and Watershed is obviously doing something right. My experience is that the AF of M is very helpful when I need a US work visa. It irks me a little to see them slagged just because some Canadian promoters want to get US acts a little cheaper. I'd very much like to learn more about this agreement and would appreciate feedback from anyone in the know. There are some obvious questions that arise from this. Question #1: Are all Canadian festivals aware of this and are all Canadian festivals eligible? If not, what are the criteria for inclusion in this program? Since we at the Nickelodeon Music Club currently pay a SOCAN tariff of 3% of gross ticket revenues it strikes me that paying a percentage of our gross performer fees would be a much better deal. While I'm waiting for the nice lady from Citizenship and Immigration (Alison Harvey, 613 957-3577) to return my call, I thought I'd comment on Alex' message. Yes, of course there's a reason we should be castigating the AFofM for insisting that Americans have to pay to play in Canada. The fact is, of course, that Canadians DO have to pay to cross into the US. This is wrong, and the fact that we decided NOT to charge visiting musicians, and then reneged on the deal, now adds up to the classic question: since when do two wrongs make a right? The fact that border crossing fees were not to be charged, under the proposed new regulations, was the biggest stick we had to convince the Americans not to charge for Canadians, thus resulting in a "free" border. >My experience is that the AF of M is very helpful when I need a US work >visa. Of COURSE the AFofM is helpful when Alex wants to play in the States; their muscle in sorting out this aggravating waste of paper and paperwork is why hundreds of musicians are in the AFofM in the first place; if there were no fees to work in America, dozens of members would quit, because the union - in their view - does nothing else for them. >It irks me a little to see them slagged just because some Canadian >promoters want to get US acts a little cheaper. That is SO much b.s. I can hardly believe it. Hey, when I bring in American artists (and frequently hire Canadians to open for them) the artist pays at the border, I repay the artist, and I include the fee in my show budget - which means it becomes one more reason why ticket prices are what they are. Every time Alex pays to see an American artist,, he can console himself that HE is helping pay the fee in the form of a higher ticket price. Just as germane to this is that collecting this money costs us all as taxpayers. The money they collect does not pay for the cost of collecting it - this was one of the reasons that the border crossing fees were canceled. We have a gutless government, and a died-in-the-wool reactionary AFofM in Canada more concerned with protecting its turf and delivering a "service" to members who wouldn't need it if there were no fees, and one that certainly isn't helping its American members. Finally, we have an impediment to the free exchange of music that costs us all money as taxpayers. Great deal, Alex! The key to understanding all of this is appreciating the distinction between Employment Validation and Employment Authorization. Employment Validation is issued by Human Resources & Development Canada, and is a safeguard for the Canadian workforce. In a nutshell, it is designed to prevent foreign workers from taking jobs away from eligible Canadians. An offer of employment must be validated by HRDC in circumstances where it is possible that a Canadian could do the job just as well as any foreign worker. One such circumstance is in a club, where the primary activity is bar sales and the music, in HRDC's eyes, is merely there to bolster that activity. Some venues and festivals have what is known as an AO8 exemption, where the employer has demonstrated that their primary raison-d'etre is arts presentation, and therefore are not required to have their offers of employment validated. Employment Authorization (often called work permits or work visas) are issued by Citizenship & Immigration Canada and acts as a control to the flow of humanity into and out of Canada. The authorization is only issued once a prospective worker has been deemed eligible to enter and work in Canada and the job for which they are coming to Canada to perform has been either validated or covered under an exemption. The recent changes all centre around CIC, where they intended to allow performing artists engaging in "short term" (still awaiting clear definition on the term) contracts to enter Canada as visitors, discarding the need for Employment Authorization. It is my understanding that as a visitor, one need not have an offer of employment validated by HRDC. Simple enough until HRDC decided (under pressure from the union, it has been rumoured) that artists destined to clubs, hotels, bars, etc. would continue to require Employment Validation regardless. At this point the windows get well fogged. Does the need for validation therefore mean that the musicians are no longer entering as visitors? Only time will tell. Ultimately it is worth bearing in mind that we are dealing with two different sections of government, which are inextricably, not to mention inexplicably linked. TERRY is the 1997 regional winner of Standard Radio’s National Songwriting Competition and the only two-time winner of the Ontario Council Of Folk Festival’s Songs From The Heart competition, taking that honour in 1998 and 2001. TERRY TUFTS blends a well-traveled personal history into music without boundaries. From Kathryn's Website: Kathryn Briggs began making music at the age of seven and it gradually became her life's work. As soon as her studies at the piano began, she was eager to write her own songs, writing her first at eight. While studying with several diversely talented teachers, she began to teach neighbourhood children and after completing high school started a teaching career in earnest. After establishing her business with great success, Kathryn's interest in writing was rekindled. Greatly influenced by the emergence of artists such as Tori Amos, Enya and Liz Story, Kathryn was encouraged by the growing popularity of women & their pianos and her writing flourished. She has since presented her compositions to receptive audiences across Canada.
