EMMLOU, RALPH STANLEY, NORMAN & NANCY BLAKE, CHRIS THOMAS KING AND
MORE 'OH BROTHER' CAST MEMBERS COME DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN
Most of us in the roots music community are still in some kind of
disbelieving shock at the amazing success of the film O Brother Where
Art Thou, and its 2 1/2 million-selling soundtrack. Now those of us
in the Toronto are have the chance to see many of the musicians who
supplied the music - plus some more astonishing players from the
country, bluegrass and roots music worlds.
Down From The Mountain is the title of the concert, set for
the Air Canada Centre on February 6. Here's the line-up (for folk
outside Toronto, read and weep!):
EMMYLOU HARRIS
PATTY LOVELESS
RALPH STANLEY
RHONDA VINCENT
NORMAN & NANCY BLAKE
CHRIS THOMAS KING
BOB NEUWORTH
THE PEASALL SISTERS
THE WHITES
THE NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS BAND
THE DEL McCOURY BAND

A coupla points, if I may. The first is that the AC Centre
has remarkably good sound; I saw Clapton there, and while the show
didn't turn my crank (I agreed with the Globe writer, who said Eric
phoned in the show and left a note reading "EC was here"), the
production, lights and - most particularly - the sound were all
top-notch, which may be encouraging to some of you who've not been to
an arena show in a while!
You'll be familiar with most of the folk in the line-up - but
I'd be remiss not to mention Norman and Nancy Blake, who I don't
think have been in these parts since Mariposa was on the Island lo
those 30-odd years ago. Chris Thomas King, who plays bluesman Tommy
Johnson in the movie, has a wonderful new release on Stony Plain.
Ralph Stanley? When was the last time he played Toronto? I remember
hiring the Nashville Bluegrass Band at Mariposa in Molson Park, and
they were stunning. Del came through with Steve Earle, but I don't
think The Whites have ever played here.
Oh, and if you think Paddy Loveless is just another
mainstream pop/country singer, check out her new album.
As for Ms. Emmy, I'm still in love after all these years.
This is one nobody oughta miss, okay?
Richard
(who's generally averse to arena shows, but is delighted to be
helping out by publicising this one!)
