"Official" article below, but anyone who's visiting Lanark County on the
Saturdays of Jan. 12, March 2 or April 6 please come on down to the Old Town
Hall in Almonte and catch some great acoustic music . . .
A Little Bit of "folkus" Brings New Concert Series to Almonte
Inspired by the amazing energy that's made Arts Fusion, the Almonte &
District Arts Council Performing Arts (classical) series, and On Stage for
Kids concerts so successful in recent years, a group of local musicians and
music lovers has created a new folk music series aptly called "folkus".
The series kicks off Saturday Jan. 12th with The Ragged Flowers and the
five-piece band's vocally rich, powerfully crafted blend of rhythm-based,
world-music-inspired compositions. It will be the local group's first
appearance in town since Canada Day, after a triumphant summer shaking hips
and tree-limbs at established folk festivals such as Blue Skies in support of
their debut CD 'Love to Burn'.
March 2nd sees Borealis recording artist Terry Tufts take the folkus stage to
deliver what CBC critics have called one of the finest finger-style guitar
performances in Canada, not to mention the smooth, sweet voice that graces
his recently released fourth solo album, 'Walk On'. Terry is also known for
his many collaborations and worldwide tours with artists such as Susan
Aglukark, Don Ross, Stephen Fearing, David Wiffin, Laura Smith, The Arrogant
Worms, and Lynn Miles.
April 6th brings Peggy White, a Vancouver artist who made Almonte her new
hometown just two short years ago, and has already graced stages at the
National Arts Centre, Rasputin's and last summer's Arts Fusion. While her
earliest influences stemmed from roots and traditional country, Peggy credits
artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor
for helping shape her musical style. In April, she will bring her band,
including her life partner, co-writer and bass player Gene Bruce, to perform
songs from her new CD being released this summer.
Per person ticket prices for all three performances in the folkus concert
series are $35, with advance per person tickets going for $13 (available at
The Miller's Tale Bookstore, 256-9090) or $15 at the door of the Old Town
Hall. Doors open at 8pm, with the headline act playing 9pm-10:15pm. For
further information call 256-5081 or email kris@thehumm.com.
