A return of one of Scotland's finest traditional groups - The
Battlefield Band. Named after the Glasgow suburb where the group was
formed, the Battlefield Band have been on the world's roads for over 30
years, distilling their own unique form of the Scottish spirit and
bottling it in concert and onto disc They have broken down barriers and
pioneered many new directions which others have followed. Angry,
joyful, raucous, contemplative, their music is most importantly -
accessible to all. This time, we welcome a new line-up. Over the years
there have been numerous personnel changes - musicians have left to meet
new challenges, their places being taken by new musicians. This has
always added continued creativity, freshness & enthusiasm to the band.
Joining founding band member Alan Reid and piper Mike Katz are Karine
Polwart, a singer, guitarist & songwriter, and young fiddler Alasdair
White. Karine replaces Davy Steele who sadly passed away in the last
year. A fine singer, she has already proved to be a major addition to
the Band, as the Scotsman attests - [Her] lead vocals balance arresting
brightness and warmth with commanding gravitas. Her rhythmic touch and
narrative eloquence sound equally assured on a heartfelt love-lament, a
witchcraft ballad or a jaunty courting song. {March 2000}. Alasdair
comes from the Island of Lewis where in spite of his young age as been
making his mark for years. His talent was duly noted by the Scotsman in
1997 - "…[stood] a 13 year-old maestro of the Highland fiddle playing
surging strathspeys and reels with maturity and expertise beyond his
tender years" - where he was young musician of the year. He replaces
John McKusker - who has moved onto other projects including marriage to
Kate Rusby. Reserve now - this concert will be sold-out!
