Tues Nov 13 - Open Stage w/ host Trevor Mills
8pm, no cover <http://www.hughsroom.com/zopenstage.html>
weekly
Think Hugh's Room is just a great place to come and listen to music?
Well, it also happens to run one of the finer open stages around town.
Host Trevor Mills brings warmth, fun and enthusiasm to the open stage
every Tuesday night. The music gets going
around 8pm and the sign up is strictly first-come-first-served. A signup
sheet is put out at 7pm. If you want to play early, show
up between 7 and 7:30.
A unique thing that you'll find at Hugh's Room open stage is a complete
sound system, a professional sound person working the board, and enough
microphones and direct boxes to handle anything. The only thing you need
is your own patch chord.

Wed Nov 21 - Kelly Joe Phelps w/ Cara Luft opening
$15adv/$17.50
After cutting three stark, searing records of guitar-and-voice
blues that have earned him a reputation as one of the best living
slide guitarists (and won him fans in Steve Earle, Bill Frisell,
and U2's The Edge), Kelly Joe Phelps has decided to lay aside his
slide in favor of straight finger-picking and enlist a full band
in service of his tightest, most affecting set of songs yet.
SKY LIKE A BROKEN CLOCK, Phelps' newest record, locates the
dynamic, emotional performances which have made Phelps' live shows
so legendary in a lush soundscape of string bass (played by Larry
Taylor, bassist for Tom Waits), supple drumming (courtesy of
Billy Conway of Boston's cult heroes Morphine), stabs of Hammond
organ, and soaring cello.
Which is not to say that SKY LIKE A BROKEN CLOCK is a total
departure from the stripped-down style that brought so much
critical acclaim to Phelps' first three records - more like a
step forward, the latest step down a path Phelps first started on
at the age of seventeen. It was at that age that Phelps started
playing his first gigs, not with bluesmen from the Mississippi
Delta, but with Washington state jazz musicians.
Raised in a musical family (he took up the piano at age eight,
and soon afterwards learned guitar, drums, and bass), Phelps
discovered the music of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Ornette
Coleman in his teenage years, and at a time when most kids his
age were rebelling to rock and roll, Phelps was emulating the
heady experimentalism and emotional directness of the free jazz
masters...

Cara Luft
Cara Luft is one of the premier singer-songwriters on the current
Western Canadian folk scene, delighting audiences with her
stunning blend of insightful lyrics, exciting guitar work and
passionate vocals. Her musicianship earned her a spot at the
prestigious International Guitar Festival in England as well as at
Calgary's 1998 Lilith Fair Concert where she received the
warmest response to any opening act on that year's tour.
Cara has just released her third professional recording, "Tempting
the Storm," a collection of dramatic fare that highlights both her
eye for detail as a songwriter and her ear for memorable melody in
her compositions. It is a combination of original and traditional
music that speaks solidly to her roots in the folk world.
"Tempting the Storm" has also been nominated for a 2001 Prairie
Music Award in the Outstanding Roots Recording category.

Thur Nov 22 - Magoo CD Release - "Shirt Pay"
$12 joined on stage by David Woodhead, Jason
Fowler, Wendell Ferguson, Daisy DeBolt & some
surprise guests!
Magoo has been writing songs and playing them in clubs, concerts
and at festivals across the country since 1975. In the 1980's,
working with a promoter in the US, he opened shows for Taj Mahal,
Roger McGuinn, The Band, Joe Cocker and David Bromberg among
others. He formed a rocking little band called the Nu Magoos, and
enlisted the playing talents of one Kirk Elliott. In 1987, he and
Kirk recorded "Sing a Song of Mother Goose", which sold around the
world and hatched the family duo Kirk and Magoo.
They subsequently recorded "We are the Dinosaurs" and "I Don't
Want to Keep My Room Clean" for kids of all ages and began touring
the Kirk and Magoo show.
A live concert was produced as a television special. These
recordings have become cult classics with families for their
clever lyrics and diverse musicality and the journey continues.
Kirk and Magoo have just released their latest adventure called
"Mars Rocks!". This time the lads blast off to deep space.
Now we have Magoo's new CD, "Shirt Pay", a rootsy rockin', folk
singin' festival in a box that manages to capture what it is he
does. From the intimacy of two guitars and a good song to the flat
out fun of a great band playing live off the floor, this record is
a real good ride...

Fri Nov 23 - Brian Gladstone
$12
Toronto singer/guitarist Brian Gladstone is a finger-picking
guitar master, a prophetic lyricist, a philosophical story-teller
and a colourful performer. The natural evolution beyond Brian
Gladstone’s first CD ‘Back to the Dirt’ – debut effort released in
1999 which gained world wide attention and remained in the top 100
World Wide Mainstream Charts for several weeks - is yet another
all acoustic offering appropriately titled ‘Psychedelic Pholk Psongs’.
As with Brian’s first CD ‘Back to the Dirt’ - the sound throughout
'Psychedelic Pholk Psongs' is entirely acoustic; no electrical
instruments used. In fact, so committed was he to this ethic, when
co-producer/engineer Robert Digioia plugged in the bass for a
track, Brian went so far as to yank out the chord...

Jim Layeux
Jim Layeux grew up in Bell’s Corners, just west of Ottawa
bordering the farming country of the Ottawa Valley. At the age of
21 he was heading downtown to learn his craft in what remains
today a healthy Ottawa folk community. After a few years playing
in coffeehouses and bars, Jim arrived in Toronto for a visit and
stayed for 12 years. During this period, he was involved in the
Mariposa Folk Foundation, appeared at dozens of folk clubs, folk
festivals, benefits, and schools across Ontario, and recorded five
albums!
Influenced by the songwriting styles of Tom Paxton, Gordon
Lightfoot & Bob Dylan, Jim's ever-observant writer's eye and
poignant story-songs tell many a tale of our country's characters,
landscape and struggles. You'll also find him reaching well beyond
our country's borders in his latest CD, "Red Dust", with songs
about starfaring sailors, red dust & life beyond our earthly imaginings!

Lenore
With a vocal style "reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones" (Extreme
Magazine) and lyrics that "rise to the level of a Michael Stipe or
Leonard Cohen" (Soundbytes), Lenore is rapidly growing into an
entertaining and engaging solo artist with a style all her own -
bluesy, folk-rockin' fun!
Lenore sprang onto the scene in 1997 with her self-titled debut
album, which hit independent radio charts worldwide, and
continues to receive international airplay. Following this
success, Lenore is back in the studio working on her second album.
Tentatively titled, "Wastin' Time", the new CD will be released
later this year, and will include fan favourites, 'The Smokin'
Song', 'We Were Lovers', 'Just A Baby', and 'Nevermore'.
It is in her live shows, however, that Lenore truly shines,
captivating audiences of all ages and backgrounds through her
infectious enthusiasm and desire to entertain. "She connected to
the crowd with a high impact, energetic acoustic show, with
musicianship and a sound that will take her far. Do not miss the
opportunity to experience the music of Lenore".
(Jeff Fellers, Billboard).

Sat Nov 24 - Tanglefoot
$18
They have a big, full-throttle sound, a relentlessly energetic
live show and some of the best songwriting in the business.
Tanglefoot is making headlines in the world of acoustic music,
winning a large and rabidly enthusiastic community of friends,
fans and camp-followers throughout Canada, the United States
and Great Britain.
Tanglefoot began in the early 1980s as a three-piece group known
for lusty interpretations of traditional Canadian folk music. As
the group evolved and personnel changed, the emphasis changed
towards songwriting rooted in Celtic, French-Canadian and Ottawa
Valley traditions.
"Full Throated Abandon" is Tanglefoot's most recent recording
(produced by veteran producer Paul Mills), and Crossroads Magazine
Music Awards Gold Star winner for best album in the Contemporary
Folk Band category.
Excellent recording - but check out their live performance!
Right from the early days, playing Ontario concerts and festivals,
it was evident the band had a vibrant and entertaining edge that
one concert-goer described as "Stan Rogers meets Van Halen"...
