They've performed before at Acoustic Harvest, as part of our Voices of
Youth concert. Then they were called Garrison Creek, and we are proud to
have them back in their new incarnation, Flapjack. Flapjack, in one of
their several configurations, play old-time Canadian bush swing. This is
an exciting fusion of fiddle tunes, backwoods kitchen percussion and jug
jazz. The core of the band are JAY EDMUNDS and KAREN TAYLOR, playing
original and traditional songs and tunes ranging from swinging ditties
about Manitoulin Island to Ottawa Valley fiddle music. TEILHARD FROST and
SAM ALLISON provide strong vocal backup, percussion, harmonicas and
acoustic bass.
Jay and Karen have been playing and performing together for five years.
Award-winning songwriters and composers, their sound is traditionally
grounded yet original, with tight vocal and instrumental harmonies that
only come from hours together around the woodstove.
Jay plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar, and sings. His love of nature and
Ontario history shape his music, and his influences range from Norman
Blake to David Grisman to Woody Guthrie.
Karen sings, plays fiddle and clawhammer banjo. She enjoys playing for
square dances, contras and clogging, and her strong melody playing brings
a solid groove to Flapjack's unique sound.
Teilhard Frost has been with the band from the start, adding vocals,
washboard, feet, bones, jaw harp, harmonica and a few surprises as well.
He can lay down a catchy beat with anything from a walnut to a piece of
cheese.
Sam Allison has been a long-time collaborator with Jay. Trained as a jazz
musician, Sam has written award winning music for theatre. Sam adds a
wild, high harmony to the vocals and a strong bass to the music.
An exciting and entertaining evening awaits you at Acoustic Harvest. Don't
miss it!
