Hi all. I don't know if many of you are familiar with a concert series
taking place in Kitchener that has been featuring some outstanding
singer/songwriters over the past three years (i.e. past performers featured
included Laura Smith, Ron Sexsmith, etc.) but for those who don't here is
some info on the upcoming series of shows. This series is held in a small
and intimate setting (the audience sits at tables set up on the stage in the
main theatre with seating limited to only 250) at The Centre In The Square,
one of the area's finest concert halls. Below are the full details. Hope
many of you can make it out for some of these shows.

Kitchener's Centre in the Square Launches Third Season of ON STAGE Concert
Series with PEI's fiddling star Richard Wood
In January 2002, Kitchener, Ontario's The Centre In The Square theatre
launches its third season of presenting some of Canada's finest performers
with its ON STAGE Concert Series. The first performer in the three-artist
series is Prince Edward Island's fiddling sensation Richard Wood. Wood
performs on Thursday January 31, 2002 (8pm). The other performers in the ON
STAGE Series are the Susie Arioli Swing Band (Thursday April 11/02) and the
Songwriter's Circle (which will feature three as yet unnamed
singer/songwriters) on Thursday June 6/02.
Richard Wood, who follows in the footsteps of a long line of outstanding
fiddlers and Celtic performers from the Maritimes, is making his first solo
appearance in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. At only 22 years of age, Wood has
already won two East Coast Music Awards (for Best Roots/Traditional Artist
and Instrumental Artist, both in 1998), has made main stage appearances at
most major folk festivals, has made nine tours of Europe, released five CDs,
and has appeared on The David Letterman Show and Good Morning America with
country superstar Shania Twain. Wood is also now performing regularly with
The Chieftains. For his Kitchener show, Wood will be performing with Gordon
Belsher on guitar and Megan Bergeron on piano and stepdancing.
As a youth, Wood showed his talent very quickly as he only picked up the
fiddle for the first time at age 11; he then won the Don Messer Memorial
Trophy for top Maritime fiddler when he was 12. Richard is also a champion
stepdancer, and when combined with his fiddling, this makes for a
spectacular performance.
The Centre In The Square's ON STAGE Series is a warm, moving and utterly
unique experience. Once again this season, the audience will share the stage
in an intimate setting with the performer. With the capacity of the setting
limited to only 250 tickets, the audience sits close to the performer(s) at
tables set up on the theatre's stage. Reminiscent of experiencing these fine
performers in the intimacy of one's living room, the unique experience of
these performances is not to be missed. And with a new and lower pricing
structure this season, The Centre In The Square is hoping to attract a more
diverse audience to these outstanding shows.
The KW Record's reporter Robert Reid, who covers the singer/songwriter and
acoustic music scene extensively in Kitchener, has praised this series and
its intimate setting. Reid has written in the KW Record that, "Except for
the Arkell Schoolhouse Gallery, there's no better place anywhere in the area
to hear singer-songwriters than on stage at The Centre In The Square. The
audience is close to the artists and the sound is excellent. Moreover, there
are no extraneous noises or distractions of any kind. In short, nothing
comes between the audience and the song."
So don't miss this chance to hear some of Canada's finest performers,
starting with Richard Wood on Thursday January 31/02.
Prices for the series of three shows are $59. Individual concert tickets are
also available at a price of $25 per show. Tickets are available by calling
The Centre In The Square Box Office at 1-800-265-8977 or 519-578-1570. The
Centre In The Square is located at 101 Queen Street North, Kitchener. More
information on The ON STAGE Series can be found at The Centre In The Square
website (www.centre-square.com <http://www.centre-square.com>). Kitchener is
located about 1 hour west of Toronto.
