the discussion about how the ASCAP-BMI competition resulted in more
diversity on the airwaves made me think of john malone's fine book,
"country music usa", which delves into this in depth.
can't think of a canadian/folk-music parallel (unless it's the advent of
can-con regulations), but it is interesting to note that a lot of the early
sides cut by the likes of the carter family, jimmy rogers, etc, used
material from tin pan alley.
