Wed Nov 7 - Betty & The Bobs
8:30, $6, monthly
Betty and the Bobs was formed as an extracurricular vehicle for
a group of Toronto musicians and friends who had worked together
in different bands. The mandate is to do all the songs they have
ever wanted to do, but would never get around to doing in their
own bands.
This includes a bunch of old tunes they grew up with -- country,
blues, R&B, Beatles, gospel, old jazz, as well as some wacky,
original songs.
The Bettys are: SOOZI (SWAMPERELLA) SCHLANGER (vocals) SHELLEY
ZUBOT (vocals), & KATHERINE WHEATLEY (vocals and guitar).
The Bobs are: DAVID WOODHEAD - bass, guitar, lap steel; WENDELL
FERGUSON - guitar; RICH GREENSPOON - drums; and BILL BRENNAN -
piano, accordian, percussion.

information about this great band!

Thur Nov 8 - Open Stage Feature:
8:00, $6 with
Richard Burnett
Dave McCauley & Don Stewart
Troy Mclaggan
- Don Stewart and Dave McCauley
Progressive-folk combo, in some ways new to the Toronto music scene in
Ontario. An eclectic mix of material, some original
and some interpretations of songs written by those they consider
to be their mentors.
Don Stewart and Dave McCauley began performing in the late
1970's under the unlikely name of Chicken Spit (the orgin of
that name is a story in itself). It was a time when the Toronto-based
folk scene was producing some great music and Chickin Spit's mission was
to introduce a larger audience to
the words and music of Willie P. Bennett, David Wiffen,
Fraser & Debolt, Brent Titcomb, Dave Essig, Watson & Reynolds
et al.
As some other commitments took hold, Chicken Spit stopped performing for
many years, but the pair reunited in 1993 opening for Brent Titcomb.
That night also saw the addition of Jesse Stewart, a gifted
percussionist, to the group. While still
paying homage to some of their favourite composer/performer friends,
Stewart & McCauley and Company have refined their sound and are adding
more original material to their repertoire.
- Troy Mclaggan
Troy is a guitarist of diversity and depth. He has recorded and
performed with artists such as Amy Sky, Cindy Church, David Leask,
Suzie Vinnick and has done countless sessions for radio, T.V. and
theatre in diverse genres from classical, folk, pop, gospel, metal and
industrial music. His first love, however, is
of a good song and the acoustic guitar. He cites his influences
as Bruce Cockburn, Michael Hedges, Mississippi John Hurt, Claude Monet,
Ernest Hemingway, Hunter Thompson, Yngwie Malmsteen and
the occasional shot of Jim Beam. Clearly a man on the edge. Yet
it does make for some interesting guitar pickin'.
(apologies, at the time of writing, I do not have information
about Richard Burnett, but I hear from folks who've heard him
at the weekly Open Stages that he's fantastic!)

Fri Nov 9 - Loudon Wainwright III
8:30 w/ Mad Violet (Brenlee MacEachern & Lisa
$20adv/$22.50 MacIsaac) opening
Loudon Wainwright III marks the release of his latest album,
"Last Man On Earth", in a rare Toronto appearance at Hugh's
Room this Friday night! The new album is a wonderfully bitter-sweet
reflection on his "on-going mid-life crisis", relationships, loss and
his eternal "inability to come to terms with computers, cellphones,
e-mail and other new technologies!"
In addition to his long-running music career ("Last Man On
Earth" is his 19th album), he is currently starring in
Undeclared, a critically acclaimed new television sitcom
(without a laugh track!) on the Fox network and Global.
He has recently been profiled in the New York Times and in
Entertainment Weekly. He'll be featured this Thursday night
on the Open Mike with Mike Bullard Show. Hope you can tune in.

Sat Nov 10 - Valdy
8:30, $17
"Unquestionably the most public performer in Canada
today, and the most loved."
-- Macleans
"Few performers are capable of achieving the kind of
energy he generates on stage."
-- Globe and Mail
"Valdy remains one of the country's purest and most
credible
storytellers." -- Toronto Star
Valdy, born Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, has been part of
the fabric of Canadian folk & pop music for years.
Remembered for Play Me a Rock and Roll Song, Valdy has sold
almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, and has two Juno Awards,
seven Juno nominations, and four Gold albums to his credit.
Along the way, he's taken his music to a dozen different countries, from
Denmark to Australia, been an invited performer for five years in a row
at the prestigious Kerrville Festival in Texas, and even played a lead
role in an episode of The Beachcombers.
Today, he's based on Salt Spring Island, where he lives with his wife
Kathleen, three dogs and two large cats (the three grown-up "kids" are
all now living in the southern mainland of British Columbia).
