The Cuckoo's Nest Folk Club presents "Newfoundland fiddle & song" with
CHRISTINA SMITH & JEAN HEWSON -- Sunday, November 11, 2001=20
Since 1985, Christina & Jean, both native Newfoundlanders, have =
dedicated themselves to the preservation and performance of Newfoundland =
music. Their long-standing friendships with the older generation of =
singers and musicians such as the late fiddlers, Emile Benoit and Rufus =
Guinchard, have given them a unique repertoire of songs and tunes that =
are rooted in the traditions of "The Rock". With their instrumentation =
of voice, guitar, fiddle and cello, they shape this material into a =
repertoire which runs the gamut from rollicking dance tunes and =
hilarious ditties, to chilling murder ballads; all mixed with liberal =
doses of the humour and wit for which Newfoundlanders are so justly =
famous.
Tickets are $15 advance & $18 at the door. Reserve by calling 673-0334 =

New this year - Buy your Cuckoo's Nest tickets in advance with a 5-for-4 =
Concert Pass. $60 gets you into 5 concerts...that means you pay for four =

ticket prices) are not included. 5-for-4 tickets are available at the =

The Battlefield Band play Scottish music of a rare passion and joy. =
Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the =
strength and vibrancy of today's Scottish cultural scene, which indeed =
they have done much to create and fuel, they have led, and been at the =
forefront, of a great revival in Scottish music. In September 2000, =
Karine Polwart (Malinky, MacAlias), a fine singer, guitarist and =
songwriter, joined the band. It's been a while since a woman was part of =
the line-up and while deeply saddened by the loss of the late Davy =
Steele (band member who passed away Wednesday, April 11,2001 after =
battling a malignant brain tumour), the band are looking forward to the =
next chapter in its history. A new CD "Happy Daze" was released this =
year and is dedicated to Davy. Alasdair White (fiddler, =
multi-instrumentalist, and composer) has recently joined the band to =
take over the band=92s hot fiddle chair. He follows in the foot-steps of =
two good'uns Brian McNeill and John McCusker. With this new line-up, =
Battlefield Band will continue to unlock memories you didn't even know =
you had!=20
