This 'conversation' has taken a nice turn West -- only as part of a =
cycle, I am sure -- but if it's now becoming a bit dull to our Eastern =
members (and who are beginning to comment), please consider that it's =
nice too for those of us out here to be able to contribute, to share. =
Canadian Music, no matter what the genre, is balanced on the back of =
perspectives gained throughout our nation and through the experiences we =
get to exchange through mediums like MPL.
It's one of the wonders that permit Celtic/Maritime music, or generic =
'folk', or Qu=E9bec traditional music, or what-EVERRR... to create and =
maintain an interested and committed audience in a place as far from =
their own sources as, say, the Yukon.
MaplePost, by its very name, is a national venture. It lets opinions =
and viewpoints from across the country get 'aired', then invites input =
and viewpoints. We at RAIYA love it, and much of the information I =
screen gets passed right through the pipe to our membership, who also =
love and encourage it.
So keep it coming, be it Nostalgia or Sam's. Here in the Yukon, we even =
had our own part of the nostalgia thread brought back to life when I saw =
the questions/comments about Joe Mock and Valdy. Pied Pumkin (dare I =
say) got its beginning at the Farrago Folk Festival (Faro, Yukon, can't =
remember if it was '76 or '77), which I SM'd -- that was the very first =
time Shari Ulrich sang in public. You may have heard of her since... =
(har). Farragos also included Valdy, Roy Forbes, Connie, Dan Hill... =
plus more who have left us, like Stan Rogers and Mimi Farena. It was a =
heady time.
And I gotta say, what FUN to get the input of Beverlie Roberts and her =
recollections of The Forge and the Century Inn in Victoria. It =
reminded me (because I was there, then) of when....
I had a (full) head of (brown) hair
My army greatcoat and ponytail were de rigeur
Converted schoolbuses were way cool
I didn't have to watch what I ate, or monitor my blood pressure
Draft beer was 25 cents a glass
etc, etc, etc...
Ain't life grand. As part of The Canadian Tapestry, even a =
sparsely-populated place like the Yukon plays its part in the warp and =
woof of a national piece.
I know, I know -- you would like to correct me, and say that its 'weft', =
but please consider -- we have 30,000 people in the Yukon, and probably =
35,000 huskies. We are definitely woofed.
