First I should probably explain my role here. Derek Andrews is the driving
force behind Maplepost, and its founder. I'm the techie in the background
who tries to keep things working. Except for areas where I know Derek's
point of view I'm hesitant to do too much listmom'ing.
I can only generalize from my own (20+ years) of Internet experience. Yes
this predates the web by many years. I still remember the astonishing
switch from ed to vi on a Unix PDP-11. If you know what that means, you're
probably as grey-haired as I am.
I doubt there are ANY topics on Maplepost that interest EVERYONE.
Listserves are always a loose confederation of individuals, and each of us
has a different take on what is appropriate. I tend only to step in with
suggestions when things begin to 1) get way off topic or 2) get way too
personal. Other than that, I try to stay out of the way of free exchanges.
I wasn't in Toronto during the time of this nostalgia thread, but I don't
mind picking up a bit of the local history. Nostalgia threads tend to be a
genuinely fond look-back on our lives. Harmless, but perhaps irritating if
you're not interested in the folk scene in Toronto way back when...
On the whole, I encourage tolerance and a liberal use of the DEL key.
Filtering on [mplpost] in the subject heading and routing list traffic to
a separate folder helps.
As one wag put it "one man's fish is another man's poisson".
Cheers,
Gene
