"LEARNING ABOUT SUBMISSION"
No, No! It's not what you think! But while I have your attention...
I just wanted to pass on what I have learned while collating the =
submissions for Folk Alliance Canada. And this HAS to be true as much =
for Festival AD's, and grant/loan sources, as it has been for me. =
Except maybe by about 100 times greater, given the volumes they deal =
with annually...
This has been a great exercise, and will certainly serve well as I =
advise my own Yukon (RAIYA) member artists on how to apply for =
showcases, festivals, grants, recording loans, 'funding angels', =
whatever... so, a profound 'Thank You!', to all the artists from across =
Canada with the belief in themselves and their music, who submitted.
It's never easy to hang your heart-strings out there.
My esteem for those who work the jurying process, day in and out -- like =
the great staff at FACTOR or MusicAction and for those at Canada Council =
or programs through Canadian Heritage -- has risen beyond all =
description. It was already pretty high, and it just got reinforced. =
Tons.
TIPS:
1.. Really read the submission criteria. Read it one more time. =
Then, ask someone else to do a check that you have included all the =
things you were asked for.
2.. IF there is a submission fee, be sure to include it. If you =
'forgot', the jury may 'forget' to evaluate your submission...
3.. If there is a range of options, like full press kit or just a =
one-sheet, "That's good enough" may denote a complacency of career =
ambitions to the jurors. Not a lecture, if you can't afford it you =
can't -- but always do the best you can. Competition is fierce! Nope, =
worse than that -- it's UGLY.
4.. Of the many, many applications I have been processing, about half =
of them require me to create a file folder or repackage them in a new =
envelope so they are clearly identified. Duh. Market yourself with a =
three-cent sticker, or a one-cent label. Plain black folders, or glossy =
white unmarked envelopes? NO.
5.. By profession myself, I am a marketer, not a musician/artist. =
Lemme make this observation -- unless you are a Pavarotti or equivalent =
(where someone else HAS to notice you and will do that work for you, =
like a Label), you have chosen a tough field. If you dedicate both your =
soul and your wallet only to making the CD? You can congratulate =
yourself on an album your family and friends will love, and to maybe =
having 500+ of the 1000 you pressed -- at great cost --mouldering in the =
garage. If the album cost $15,000 to produce, there better be at least =
$3,000 more to market it, preferably $5,000. Other than that, it will =
remain a 'Vanity Album'. It's important to recognize that this is a FAR =
higher percentage of investment for marketing than almost any other =
business -- but sadly, it's real.
6.. Didn't mean to heighten anyone's already-overworked Stress Level. =
But it's fact. Talent is only one-third of the formula. Planning and =
hard work are obligatory.

I wrote and dedicate the following prayer to Cindy Perry and the staff =
at FACTOR, and to jurors and submission handlers everywhere in Canada:
Our FACTOR, which are as Heaven,
Hallow=E8d be Thy Gnomes;
Thy deadlines come,
Thy Will be done
On Earth, as it's split by Genre.
Give us this day the benefit of doubt,
And forgive us our application omissions and lack of proper information,
Lest we conspire to whine about those who conspire against us.=20
And lead us not into Delusion,=20
But deliver us from our own Ignorance.
For thine is the Boredom, and the Gruntwork,
With no Glory, for what seems like forever and ever.=20
Amen
