Further to the continuing discussion of putting CD booklets on the CD in
PDF format:
There are some technical problems here. Not all computer CD drives can
read the combined music/data formats, as I know from experience trying to
read some fairly recent mixed format CD-Rs from MP3.com. This may change
as the older drives become replaced over the next few years.
I do not know if all CD mastering software can handle the mixed format, and
this would be especially important to those people doing very short-run
products at home. Even those who want to make a master at home and then
have, say, 100 run off at a commercial CD-R factory might find that the
duplication software asks the question "music or data?" and does not accept
"all of the above" as an answer.
Perhaps what we need is a new format that must be inserted into a CD-RW
drive on initial use and looks like a data disk with an autorun
program. This program would read the .PDF file, send it to the local
printer exactly once (to avoid any possibility of unauthorized future
duplication), erase the .PDF file, and reprogram the CD header so that it
looks like an ordinary audio CD instead, after which it could be played as
often as required.
