Hi there,
I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Here's some information
about who is playing at HUGH'Sroom this week.
On Monday, we have our regular weekly feature "Acoustic Workshop
Mondays w/ Rick Fielding" (no cover). Many of you may know that
Rick is the producer and host of the widely acclaimed radio show,
Acoustic Workshop on CIUT (89.5 FM - Mondays 7-8pm). He has put together
a talented group of pickers for his post-radio show appearances starting
at 9pm and carrying on well into the wee hours.
Along with Rick, legendary musicians Tony Quarrington and Frank
Barth join Greg Monk and Bill MacLean to pick and sing a wide
variety of folk, Bluegrass, Blues and swing.
Special guests, often straight from Rick's show, will join the
band for some fun. There'll even be some dancing, and quite a
bit of jamming, with some very hot picking!

Tues June 12 - Open Stage w/ Trevor Mills
8:30, weekly feature, no cover
A great time to be had for all who come to play and listen. The
Open Stage is just that - open for any and all, from beginners to
seasoned performers. Each artist has an opportunity to play three songs
and to meet and collaborate with other artists and audience members.

Wed June 13 - The Puffins
8:30, $6
The Puffins evolved over the past few years out of Jamie Snider
and Shelley Coopersmith's experience busking together in Toronto's
subways where they discovered the joys of duo harmony fiddling,
combining Shelley's classical and jazz training with Jamie's
fiddle roots from his years in Newfoundland. Jamie and Shelley
joined forces with Rose Bolton and Mark Stairs, who they knew from the
Celtic music scene. Each had worked with one another but not
all four together before forming THE PUFFINS...

Thurs June 14 - Chris Whiteley Blues & Jazz Quartet
8:30, weekly feature, no cover
For over 25 years Chris Whiteley has been performing, writing, and
recording roots music, both as a multi-instrumentalist (trumpet,
harmonica, guitar, and pedal steel) and as a vocalist.
Along the way he has worked and recorded with such artists as
Leon Redbone, John Hammond, blues piano great Blind John Davis,
country stars Prairie Oyster and folk legend Tom Paxton among
many others. He has appeared on over 100 recordings, and if that wasn't
enough, he's also garnered four Juno nominations...

Fri June 15 - Katherine Wheatley
8:30, $10
"...turns pebbles of every day life into dreamy mountains of song"
The Toronto Star
"Her music is as inventive and unpredictable as that of Joni Mitchell;
her voice as strong and melodicas Sarah McLachlan.
This is a performer to keep you on the edge of your seat!"
The Ottawa Citizen
Katherine grew up in Parry Sound, Ontario. Her enthusiasm for music
began with a 13 dollar guitar, ordered from the Sears Catalogue. She
worked as a geologist in Northern Canada until she realized she was only
getting geology jobs because she'd play live music in the bush. After
four summers in a tent near Flin Flon, Manitoba, her music career
brought her to Toronto.
We're sure glad she made the move, and know that you will be too.

Sat June 16 - Stephen Fearing
8:30, $17
What is telling about a great songwriter's work is the ability
for their lyrics to stand on their own. Left without context, or musical
backdrop, the words still flow and have meaning. For almost 17 years
now, Stephen Fearing has been penning some of the most literate,
stirring and emotionally charged "folk" music on this planet. Couple
this with stunning guitar work, and a smooth
intimate voice, and you have the elements of the unique performer that
is Stephen Fearing...
Tune into Joel Wortzman's show "Acoustic Routes" tonight at 7pm
for a special interview with Stephen on CKLN, 88.1FM.
