At about 4:00 p.m. (Central), after a long struggle,
John Hartford passed away, I believe. His friend Bob
Carlin posted this news not too long ago.

There's a joke about two old baseball players who make
a promise to each other. Whichever one dies first,
he'll come back and appear to the other in a dream to
tell the survivor if there's baseball in Heaven.

The way I figure it, John and Benny Martin must've
made the same vow. Whoever passes first, come back
and tell the other if there's fiddle and banjo music
in Heaven. Benny probably appeared to John and said,
"I've got some great news and some even better news
  for!"

"What's the great news?" John asks him, and Benny
answers, "There's all kind of fiddle and banjo music
up here! Chubby Wise is here and Bill Monroe and
everyone else. We play all day, everyday, and our
instruments never go out of tune!" John thinks about
it and says "That sounds too good to be true. What
  could be better than that?"

"Well," Benny says, "we're getting ready to cut out on
'Gray Eagle' and your fiddle break comes right after
mine." To which John could only have replied, "Well
  all right."

May his music and memory brighten our lives as long as
  rivers flow.

  Keith Dudding
