Hey Shirley,
Dare I ask you again to help me locate a contact number for Kevin
Bell? I've just got to start putting things in my address book and stop
leaving them here in the computer where I trash stuff....
Toodles and thanks,
Michele

Please come down to the Tranzac
(292 Brunswick Ave, Toronto) tomorrow (Saturday) to say thank you to Norm
and celebrate the fabulous musical evenings that he has created as Norm's
Living Room since January 29, 2000 (which featured Kevin Bell, who was
back recently). The feature performer tomorrow is fabulous writer
and acoustic guitarist John ("JJ") Jackson (flamenco to slide,
more details below), but others will be invited to do short sets in the
usual "Living Room" tradition.
Norm's open stage, on Tuesdays at the Tranzac since October 26, 1999
(which featured Laura Thomas), will also be ending in a few weeks - on
Tuesday June 26.
The Tranzac has decided to end both series. There will likely be
music on those evenings (after the Fringe Festival ends on July 15), but
no details have been worked out. The acoustic blues on Thursdays
and most of the jazz continues (Wednesdays and Fridays).
Norm commented to me early this afternoon, "Some absolutely
wonderful people, including some astonishing talent, got together and
brightened a corner of this world and made it into a spiritual
oasis." I know most of those who joined us caught this feeling
too.
If you have suggestions for other locations or arrangements, please let
us know.
Here is the info for Norm's features tomorrow and the last four Tuesdays
and also the dates of his summer outdoor concerts in Toronto:
Sat June 2 - JOHN ("JJ") JACKSON is a strong songwriter and an
amazing guitarist, a master of styles ranging from flamenco to slide and
including jazz, folk and rock. His last CD is "Takin' My Own
Sweet Time" and he is in final stages of production of a new CD due
for completion mid-summer. He wrote the theme to the Great Canadian
Parks TV series. Mark your calendar for debut of "Sacred
Spaces" TV program to be aired on Discovery Channel 8-10 pm on
Canada Day. If you've been to any of the many Norm nights John has
played (solo, with Norm, with Steve Paul Simms, with Michael Laderoute),
you won't need any convincing to come hear his feature set.
We have four open stages left, so come out and support these evenings -
to play or just to listen. Our features:
Tues June 5 - RICHARD MOULAISON & CO. - fine acoustic music with a
good vibe and a nice twist. Chances are you don't recognize the
name, but especially if you're a regular who stays late, you'll recognize
the face. Usually just playing as "Rich" on the 12-string
guitar on the late shift, Rich quickly set up a quartet at the end of the
evening last Saturday (including congas and bass) that got into a lovely
groove.
Tues June 12 - MICHAEL LADEROUTE - this is a name regulars definitely
know. Michael has developed a real fan club at Norm's - and many
requests to finally start recording a CD! He has a beaten
path to Dallas Texas where he performs fairly regularly. From his
original songs ("There's a River I Know" with the gospel feel
one of his most requested) to covers to the fabulous fingerpicking
back-up to everyone who can persuade him to accompany them - here is a
feature you don't want to miss. Take a hint from Dean Cavill's song
about Norm's open stage - get there early if you're not feeling too sure
so you don't have to follow Mr. Michael Laderoute!
Tues June 19 - feature TBA.
Tues June 26 - feature TBA - an end of series bash.
Please come and bring friends - we plan to go on a very strong
note.
NORM'S NOONTIME FRIDAYS AT THE CHURCH:
The noontime Summer in the Park series returns to the church on the NW
corner of Church and Queen. Please note that these concerts are
outside and will be cancelled if it rains or if it even looks like it
might rain, and if so, there may be rescheduled new dates. More
details later, here are Norm's dates:
Friday June 22
Friday July 13
Friday July 27
Friday August 17
If you can't come in person and would like to send a message to Norm, you
may email me and I'll pass it on. Unfortunately, I won't have much
time to phone those not on email this week, so help me pass the news
around.
A huge thank you to all the players, listeners and features who made the
evenings so special. We never anticipated having features from
Australia, BC, Alberta, Yukon, Northern Ontario and a huge contingent
from Orangeville (an hour from Tranzac) with regulars coming in from the
suburbs (Oshawa to Mississauga).
Hope to see the Toronto-area folkies tomorrow and the next four
Tuesdays.
