If you want to view the lyrics on-screen while listening to a MIDI rendition of the melody, you can simply open this page: http://www.thrinberry-frog.com/VirtualSongbook/SpringWillComeLyricsAndBackground.htm Note that, depending on how your browser is configured, you might find that clicking on the link to the music will replace rather than supplement the view of the lyrics; if that happens, go back to the lyrics display and open the music in a separate window. You can also get there by starting at http://music.thrinberry-frog.com and going about three-fourths of the way down the page to the section on "The cycle of the seasons". When you do so, the lyrics-with-music version described above will be found at the link called "A simulcast!". You will also find a link to the lead sheet as a .pdf file that you can print. I have also uploaded an MP3 rendition of myself singing "Spring Will Come", with the same harp background used in the MIDI files, to www.mp3.com. As of this morning, the song had not yet been posted, but I'm hoping it will be by tomorrow. I cannot give a precise URL for how to find it, but you ought to be able to get there by searching for "Howard Kaplan". Those of you who have heard me sing might imagine that the sound of your own voice in your head while dealing with one of the lower-bandwidth versions would be preferable to such a recording. However, I should point out that the recording includes a remarkably realistic synthetic harp accompaniment, based on a downloaded waveform sound font, which your own sound card may not be able to duplicate from the MIDI version. Now, if that isn't an incentive to download the larger version, I don't know what is! :) I have now posted a total of ten of my songs' lead sheets and MIDI files on my web site, and I have included "Spring Will Come" as a way of launching this new feature in celebration of my favourite annual holiday. The current set of ten includes two seasonal songs (the other being for Christmas), two science songs ("Slow Loris" and "Professor Barleycorn"), and six re-interpretations of traditional ballads. I have now arranged for http://www.thrinberry-frog.com to be my permanent web site address and for howard@thrinberry-frog.com to be my permanent E-mail address, even if I change ISP in the future. You might want to note those changes if you're trying to keep track of me. Howard L. If you live in one of these places, don't miss Chris' great live show. --Randi ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Acoustic blues singer and songwriter CHRIS SMITHER (http://www.smither.com) has three upcoming concerts in Canada next month. As always, Chris will perform solo, on stage with just his signature blue guitar and feet mic'd for percussion. Exactly as he's captured on his stellar new CD, LIVE AS I'LL EVER BE. As NO DEPRESSION described him: 'If you've ever caught one of Chris Smither's live performances, you know it's hard not to come away knocked out by the amount of music that comes out of one man. His guitar playing is remarkably fluid. His songs are gleaming bits of gold performed in a variety of styles.' I thought maybe other maplebluzers would be interested to hear my Jay McShann story. I just came in from seeing the end of his show at the Montreal Bistro and I must say Jay is in great form! I spoke to Rosemary Galloway earlier in the day (she's playing bass) and asked if they'd been rehearsing but of course there was no rehearsal and whatsmore there's no set list and if there is a set list, Jay calls different tunes anyway. Sometimes he doesn't even call the tune, he just starts it. And with Jay, there's nothing to do but follow because he's a bit hard of hearing. He had some formidable players who had no trouble keeping up, Don Vickery on drums and Jim Galloway on (mostly tenor) sax plus Rosemary on bass. Another bass player was invited to sit in at the end of the evening, his name was Danny Mastry, he was maybe as old as Jay and really small. When he stepped up to Rosemary's bass, he hardly reached the neck, but he sure could swing. Jay was playing some amazing piano...and so relaxed. When he sang a very slow ballad (Not So Far Away ???) his voice cracked and broke all over the place but he just kept up this heartfelt singing and every note he sang ended with a bluesy sweetness, even if it had a few ups and downs on the way. At then at the end of the set, there was no real clamour for an encore (though I was shouting "one more!") and the the band had put their instuments down, a couple of people had even come up on the stage... and Jay is still sitting at the piano and starts noodling on the keys. I thought maybe he wasn't able to stand up on his own (like the time I saw Doc Cheatham at the Bistro and he stayed on the stage, not moving from his stool on the break because he was a little embarrased that he could hardly get up!). But with Jay, it was like he was going to have to be dragged away from that piano. Eighty-Five years old! I only hope I could have such enthusiasm and energy for the music at his age. Tomorrow night CBC will record the show for Saturday Night Blues. And here comes the plug for my own "Northwest Ontario Tourette" this week-end (Northwest of Toronto, anyway)... Paul Wagner sent me an email with the following question. I don't know the answer. If anyone on the list can help please be sure to answer directly to Paul as he is not a subscriber to either of these lists as far as I know. I used to live in Waterloo, ON some years ago, and once heard a song by a Canadian folk singer (then living somewhere in France?). I have tried to find him by various searches, but no luck. I believe his name was Peter Sovski (Gzowski? like the CBC broadcaster?), and his song I heard was "I'm not afraid of a vsion". Have you heard of him, and know where I can find out more about him? It was the theme song of a religious radio program in Baton Rouge in the 1940s. Hi all Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond to this question. I have just filtered through a couple of hundred packages from artists with the express purpose of determining technical requirements. Some packages had those 30 10th generation xeroxed 5-year-old reviews in an expensive glossy folder and no technical information whatsoever. Some had hand-scribbled sketches with undecipherable writing on them. The list goes on. But here is what I like to see. A cover letter giving contact information, the names of the players and what they play, when they are available to sound-check, whether or not a sound technician is travelling with the group. A clear stage plot using common icons used to represent mics, chairs, etc. Make sure you include AC requirement, DIs, and lines. If you are travelling outside of North America be sure to state your required line voltage. A summary of your stage requirements: example: 3 vocal mics 4 inst mics 2 DIs 1 line 3 monitors 2 mixes Remember that this plot may get photocopied several times so make it readable. Take the time to make a special plot for venues that don't match the requirements of your standard plot. Some artists send 3 plots - for small, medium and large venues. Best is a specific (current) plot for the show you are doing. I don't know how many times I have received 2-year-old plots from agents that don't relate to the current band. A plot design for a 1200 seat theatre probably won't work in a 120 seat cafe. If backline equipment is being provided by the presenter, be sure to attach a summary. If all your info is embedded in the plot, some might get overlooked as we extract this info to lists of gear to acquire. One artist/group per page please. Sooner is better than later. Method of delivery: It should accompany the promotional material. Production people always live in hope that the artistic directors see the stage plots and other tech requirements and take these into account when sequencing artists. My personal preference is Acrobat files because ultimately that's what I make of printed plots anyway, but everyone has there own way of working. And email is by far the most efficient way to communicate. Going to a website to search out tech info is generally a pain, unless you include a link that goes directly to it. An even then, web pages have to be designed for printing. For one artist I had to copy and save 3 different files and then combine then so I could have all the info on one page. arrghh! Emails saying "my setup is so simple I don't need to send you a plot. We just need 2 vocal mics and 2 DIs" inevitably turn into drawings, showing 2 chairs, 2 monitors, a stool for water.... Consider how many words a picture's worth... My favourite package of all time arrived last week: Page 1 - contact information. Page 2 - Technical information including accomodation requirements, optimum stage size, time required for sound check, time required to set up the band, sound system requirements, backline requirements including preferred sizes of drums, suggested channel patch list, note that sound tech will not be present. Page 3 - Stage plot showing actual (colour) photographs of the instruments in their place on the plot and individual sound requirement summaries for each player, with mic channel number references that relate back to the channel assignment page. Page 4 - A detailed stage plot showing mic placement using icons and including a legend of what the icons mean. And it arrived as a single Acobat file that I could immediately forward to all necessary parties - no photocopying, no scanning, no printing. Beauty! And you should never underestimate the favours a bottle of single malt can buy ;} Simon >From: "Simon Garber" >Reply-To: maplepost@icomm.ca >To: maplepost@icomm.ca >Subject: [mplpost] Who reads the rider? >Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 00:42:03 -0800 > >Hi, > >Given the number of gig announcements on this list, it appears that there >is >no shortage of artists and presenters represented here. >Some time ago there was a thread relating to the proper presentation of >photos to both presenters and the media. In my history, Sunday night has always been a good "folkie night". The room is free, the beer is great, so is the food and they boast the best Scotch selection in town. KBC will help with promo, feed the act, help carry PA upstairs and offer a guarantee. (that took a little work). The artist gets 100% of the door and of course merchandising. The room can squeeze 90-100 folks in. Two sets, start time 8 PM As a bonus, I am offering up a Sunday afternoon at Loblaws. (no really) It pays a couple hundred bucks and I've managed to convince the 2 "superstores" in this town to go with "acoustic" music.
