Fear of Drinking
| Vancouver's Fear of Drinking formed in the
summer of 1992. The band is Tim Readman (guitar, bass, vocals) and Gerard
Kerr (guitar, bohdran, vocals) - two totally not scared guys with a band
of nomads, a reckless musical repertoire, fearless tunes, and dangerously
captivating stage performance. Current mainstays of the band are Victor
Smith (fiddle, flute, whistles), Tom Neville (fiddle, mandolin, bass) and
Brendan Rideout (bass, whistles).
Their repertoire consists of traditional tunes from England, New Zealand, Ireland, and Scotland as well as an eclectic mixture of contemporary folk songs from a variety of sources. Their cover versions include songs by Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, Richard Thompson and Bruce Cockburn. 1996 brought appearances at two Celtic Festivals in Vancouver alongside Tommy Sands, Niamh Parsons, Kevin Burke and a host of other talented folk artists. Among the many other gigs they have played this year, Fear of Drinking stormed the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, driving sales in the beer tent to a record high. The group's debut C.D., "One Morning When I Went To Work", was released on September 28, 1996. Fear of Drinking are now recognized as Vancouver's hottest new folk act. They have earned their reputation by providing solid entertainment with their music, energy, humour and harmony, and are now on a quest to search out new audiences wherever they can be found.
