"The song, Angels on a
Cliff, stopped me in my tracks." (Bob Bossin - Artistic Director,
Gabriola Island Folk Series).
Robert Atyeo is an established singer-songwriter
whose live performances capture, excite and provoke his audiences from
coast to coast. He is currently on tour promoting his latest recording
Heart Like a Rubberball (1998). His third CD is a stronger reflection
of his solo performances with a few stellar guest musicians, such as Stephen
Fearing, Brian Griffiths, who is currently playing guitar for Willie Nelson,
and Ed Roth, keyboard player on Daniel Lanois’ Acadie CD. Robert’s third
CD is carried by DROG Records and is distributed in Canada by Outside Music.
Previous recordings include Angels on a Cliff (1994), Song For
Your Face (1993), and his first 6-song cassette If That Isn't Love
(1992) produced by Willie P. Bennett.
"All the money in the world can’t
buy you a nickel of time’ and "The Floor is Closer Than You Think"
are only two of the many lessons of life Robert Atyeo sings about. His
growing audiences enthusiastically applaud his performances relating to
his words and humour. Robert Atyeo has been compared to J.J. Cale, John
Prine and Tom Waits, with a delivery that is boisterously entertaining
and wry observances often verging on the black - his situations and characters
are worthy of Fellini or John Houston.
Robert Atyeo, along with Willie P. Bennett
and Tony Quarrington were formerly known as the Friendly Giants until they
were kindly requested by Friendly himself to please refrain from using
that particular handle...or else! Friendly and Robert have since mended
fences and Friendly can sometimes be seen attending his concerts. Robert’s
experience with the Friendly Giant has attracted the attention of Canada’s
media and musicians, such as Stephen Fearing. Stephen was inspired to write
a song about Robert and Friendly. The song is entitled "Robert’s Waterloo"
and can be found on Stephen’s CD Industrial Lullaby. Some of his other
musical collaborators have been Jane Siberry, Stephen Fearing, Colleen
Peterson and David Woodhead.
Robert Atyeo began his musical career at
the age of 9 playing ukulele and throughout the years has developed his
singing and songwriting, living and travelling throughout various parts
of North America. Since the early 90’s he has lived in Ontario, pursuing
his musical career full-time and he hasn’t looked back since. In his first
year as a full-time musician, he performed over 100 gigs. One of those
gigs happened to be singing the national anthem in the Skydome for the
BlueJays and 50,000 people with fellow artists The Bird Sisters.
He has toured throughout Canada and has
been a main-stage performer at many of Ontario’s Folk Festivals, such as
The Festival of Friends in Hamilton, CKCU Ottawa Folk Festival, Hillside
in Guelph and The Northern Lights Festival in Sudbury. Robert has been
a guest on CBC, on shows such as Morningside with Peter Gzowski, Swinging
on a Star, Heartland, Brand X and As It Happens. He is also enjoying airplay
on many other Canadian college and independent stations, as well as in
the US, Europe and Japan. Robert has also had the distinction of having
his song Welded included in the made for TV documentary, From Straw To
Structure. Robert is presently on tour in Canada promoting his latest CD,
Heart Like a Rubberball and an American and European tour are upcoming.
