"Although
a relative newcomer to Canada, guitarist Nick Naffin has been around the
international jazz scene for enough years to establish a distinctive personal
style" (The Kingston Net-Times), and
among many of North America’s leading acoustic musicians, Naffin is a respected
instrumentalist. Guitarist/singer/songwriter Cliff Eberhardt simply
calls him "a great guitar player," blues legend Jackie Washington
thinks Nick plays "brilliant - and beautiful," and according
to Canadian folk icon Bobby Watt, "calling Nick Naffin a mere guitar
player is like calling Michelangelo ‘an Italian painter and decorator’."
Naffin definitely has the ‘chops,’ and audiences in both folk and jazz
circles frequently comment on those; yet what captures their hearts is
not just the technique, but how it is used to serve musical expression.
The German-born guitarist and composer’s music has been described as "a passionate blend of acoustic world music, fuelled by the fire of flamenco, the energy of tango and the poetry of contemporary jazz" (El Popular; translated). As a solo act, in a duo with classical cellist Alyssa Wright and with his band, Nick has played repeat performances at the Eaglewood and Elora Fringe Festivals, and has appeared at the Whitby and Caledon Folk Festivals, Whitby’s Vital Spark Folk Club and at venues ranging from folk and jazz clubs to Toronto’s eclectic Music Gallery. Other highlights include showcases at last year’s North American Folk Alliance Conference, features onCity TV and Rogers Television, and at Toronto's world-renowned duMaurier Downtown Jazz Festival. Nick's debut album MUSIC
FROM THE SACRED GROUNDS,
featuring Dee Otter and Paul Therrien, contains “a
powerful collection of original tunes” (Wavelength Magazine).
The CD - recorded by multiple Grammy and Juno Award-winning engineer and
producer Phil Sheridan and produced by Naffin himself for Northern Breeze
- was released in 1997 and receives wide airplay in Canada and across the
border: "Nick Naffin puts together many genres with a flair and
with an abandon that cuts across many musical dimensions... This music
grabs your attention, keeps you there, then lets you gently go away with
feeling you’ve listened to something, well, like you’ve heard something/"
