| The Mere Mortals bring a lively
repertoire of original Canadian folk n' roll and classic Irish cover songs
to venue and theatre stages across Toronto. The band's music and style
offers celtic-flavoured merriment and energetic antics charged with the
vigour of "living for the most."
The seven-member band features a versatile cast of multi-talented musicians, actors, and writers. Together, these modern-day minstrels have rocked The Horseshoe, Clinton's, The Ultrasound Showbar, The Cameron House, The Rivoli, Sneaky Dee's, The Cabana Room, My Treehouse, and perform regularly at C'est What . They are always much in demand on St.Paddy's Day and there show this past March !7 was another sell-out. The Mortals have opened and shared the stage with: The Lost Dakotas, Melanie Doane, Fat Man Waving, Katherine Wheatley, Corky and the Juice Pigs, The Polarity Bears, Tory Cassis, Roger Lee, Ana Coutinho, The Kensington Road Show, and The Kreegan Brothers of Bare Naked Ladies fame. The Mortals Fronting The Mere Mortals is actor/singer/songwriter/musician David James Young, a graduate of the National Theatre School who has traveled across Canada working both as actor and musician. Young writes songs with the collaboration of actor/singer/musician Caitriona Murphy who plays fiddle; and composer/musician Dragoslav Tanaskovic, who plays guitar and accordion. Young also co-writes material with playwrights Micheal O'Brien, Andrew Batten, Michael Achtman, and Chuck Herriott. and Al Rae from Defintely Not the Opera and the well known Canadian comedy duo Al and George. Actor/Drummer Paul Braunstein, guitarist/mandolin blaster Troy McLaggan, and bassist Jason Epp bring together their own quirky nature and gregarious stage presence to make up the rest of the band. The Mere Mortals come from Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, the Maritimes and the former Yugoslavia, and have just completed their first CD, "Island to Island", to be released this summer. There single "My Baby Loves Wendel Clark", pays tribute to Clark and has received air-play on Q107. The Mere Mortals' performances include : The Young People's Theatre Gala Fund-raiser with Denny Doherty of The Mamas and the Papas, The Dora Mavor Moore Awards, and The Factory Theatre/ Tarragon Spring Arts Fair. As well, they have made guest appearances on CBC radio's Definitely Not The Opera, and have performed at the taping of CBC TV's "Love, Sex, and other Natural Disasters".
