Whether
it's hockey cards clothes pegged to the spokes of a bicycle; gum plugging
up the drinking fountain downtown; or a priest with bad breath in a confessional
booth, Katherine Wheatley's lyrics are vibrant. Her songs are gripping.
Her voice, "beautiful and assured" (Chart). With offhand wit and an infectious
passion for performing, she has been winning audiences across Canada. "And
man, can this serene red-head ever play guitar".
The songs on Katherine's first release, Straight Line , "burn with passion, wit and intelligence" (Network Magazine). The album charted very strong sales after its release, with 17 weeks on Sam's Top Ten Independent Charts. Katherine's long awaited second album, Habits and Heroes, was released in November 1998. It was produced by David Travers-Smith and features a who's who of talented musicians, including Stephen Fearing, David Woodhead, Gary Craig, Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo), Richard Bell (The Band) and four time Canadian Country Guitarist of the Year, Wendell Ferguson. The album kicks off with the upbeat "Snowmobile Suit", a glimpse into the painful self-consciousness of an adolescent who finds herself playing "Spin the Bottle" in a bright orange snowmobile suit. Also on the CD is "On A Beach In France", a song which Katherine performed on CTV's Canada AM to commemorate the anniversary of Dieppe. Throughout her career, media support has been tremendous. According to The Toronto Star, Katherine "turns pebbles of everyday life into dreamy mountains of song". The Ottawa Citizen states "This is a performer to keep you on the edge of your seat!" Katherine grew up in Parry Sound, Ontario. Her enthusiasm for music began with a 13 dollar guitar, ordered from the Sears Catalogue. She worked as a geologist in Northern Canada until she realized she was only getting geology jobs because she'd play live music in the bush. After four summers in a tent near Flin Flon, Manitoba, her music career brought her to Toronto.
