Jason
Fowler stepped onto the Canadian music scene with the release of his debut
CD, Hiss of Distance, in 1995. It didn’t take long before Jason
was commanding the attention of the music media and fans, both internationally
and at home:“A gifted guitarist, singer and songwriter, Toronto-based Fowler quietly released his fine album, ‘Hiss of Distance’... A real gem.” - Billboard “Actually, it’s Fowler’s fingerwork on the guitar that commands first attention. His unique talent here is not unlike the folk heroes of the past coffeehouses who brought the house to attention with brilliant acoustic guitar performances.” - RPM Weekly “Singer/songwriter, Jason Fowler, makes quite an entrance with this fine debut album... ‘Hiss of Distance’ suggests that the artist is a guitarist first, an impression driven home by some very fancy pickin’...” - Words & Music (SOCAN) Jason got his first taste of music at the early age of seven when his father placed a guitar into his hands and showed him a few basic techniques. Jason started performing at the age of twelve in clubs and cafés and fronted a series of rock bands during his high school years. After receiving his degree in classical guitar performance in 1992 from McGill University, Jason returned to his hometown of Toronto and began assembling the songs which would make their way onto his debut CD Hiss of Distance. After the release of the CD, Jason began making the rounds of clubs and festivals. Memorable performances included sold-out shows presented by the Greenbank Folk Society and an arresting performance at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, where all the CDs available for purchase quickly sold out. Jason Fowler is much sought-after as a special guest at concerts given by folk legends such as Bill Garrett & Curly Boy Stubbs, Eric Andersen and Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. Jason’s appearances on radio and television, including a still much-in-demand live performance on CBC’s Later the Same Day, have helped him establish a loyal fan base, which continues to grow. In late 1997, Jason headed south to Winfield, Kansas to compete in the National Fingerpicking Competition. The competition is held annually during the Walnut Valley Festival and attracts the world’s finest players aiming to take home top prize. Jason’s sparkling guitar work led him to the winners’ circle, where he received a custom-built guitar for his efforts. Jason began recording his second album in October 1997. Life is Rich contains 13 new compositions, including two guitar instrumentals, that illustrate Jason’s journey over the past three years. Life is Rich is a continuation of what Hiss of Distance began. Jason Fowler has, once again, produced a collection of songs which eloquently express the rich tapestry of our lives.
