| Though the eighties, Miller
avoided the pop music of the time and explored the singer-songwriters of
the early seventies. He adored and consumed hours of Cat Stevens, James
Taylor, Bruce Cockburn, Joni Mitchell and later, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny
and John Martyn. He felt (and still does) that this form of personal expression
was immediate and precious. These writers shaped his values and perspective
during a very formative time.
Before attending McGill University for a degree in cultural anthropology, he spent nine months with the Katimavik Youth Volunteer program working in rural Canada. McGill then opened him up to the international community. Development, politics and culture consumed much of his thought. He was lucky enough to travel to Europe and Southern Africa during that time. He was also playing covers in campus cafés and finally began writing songs in his final year. On his return to Ontario he began building his teaching career. He also became acquainted with Juno Award winning producer Eugene Martynec (Bruce Cock burn and Rough Trade). They worked on a demo project, but more importantly, Martynec taught Miller how to structure songs and encouraged him to write continuously. He also took vocal training from José Heranadez. Slowly he added members to his band - people he felt were friends and strongly talented. David Matheson (Moxy Früvous-Warner) produced two demo projects with him as well as the current CD.
