Jeffra is from San Francisco,
a professional singer/songwriter and actress, music arranger and theatrical
composer. As an actress she appeared most notably for two years in the
US national company of Les Miserables (understudy for Madame Thenardier
and playing up to seventeen parts a night). She has played a variety of
leading roles in such shows as Jesus Christ Superstar, The Tempest, Angry
Housewives, Oklahoma. She starred as Nurse Nellie in South Pacific all
this summer (3-5000 people a night with real WW II aircraft flying over
the stage at the finale). California's "The Mountain Play" produces
these great outdoor musicals staged atop Mt. Tamalpais overlooking the
city and the Golden Gate, and in Jack London State Park.
Jeffra has released one vinyl album of
her own material titled "Jeffra," a cassette recording "Club
Stuff," (cover tunes reflecting her audience' requests) and her original
"Grace / Celebration," questionably the last recorded "45"
of the Twentieth Century. She has enjoyed a successful solo career headlining
in club and concert performances as well as performing with many bands
in the S.F. Bay Area. She finally retired her Toyota truck after ten years
and 330,000 miles carrying her Yamaha electric grand piano and sound system
to appearances around the bay. Her behind-the-scenes theatrical work has
ranged from Children's Theatre to Shakespeare, as well as a USO tour of
the South Pacific, a recent festival in Japan and a tour of the US and
Canada with Columbia Artists' presentation of "Asinamali," a
brilliant a cappella musical from the Market Theatre of Johannesburg.
During this tour she met Doug McArthur,
who, at that time, was the Associate Director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival
which was presenting "Asinimali."
Doug is from London, Ontario, where he
appeared at Smale's Pace Coffee House, acted as Entertainment Booker at
Change of Pace and toured as opening act for Stan Rogers and then Garnet
Rogers, as well as pursuing his own concerts and recording "Letters
From The Coast / Sisteron", "A Change of Face" (his comedy
album), "Doug McArthur with Garnet Rogers", and "Smoke Road"
with Jeffra. For two years he wrote and performed comedy and music on the
CBC radio show "Touch The Earth,"( produced by Paul Mills,) appearing
as the "World Famous Folksinger." His other credits include stints
as the Audience Co-ordinator and Tour Manager for Orchestra London, and
Production Associate for both Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto and the du Maurier
Jazz Festival. His songs have been recorded by and / or performed by Stan
Rogers, Garnet Rogers, Colleen Peterson, Bobby Watt, Valdy, Bill Hughes,
Mark Haines & Tom Leighton (a fine version of "Boots & Saddles
is on their new CD.
They released their CD "Angels of
the Mission Trail" last July and response has been very strong in
California. Sing Out magazine has praised it and it is getting regular
airplay in Oregon and California. There has also been a strong response
from Toronto and Ottawa. Doug & Jeffra have opened for Garnet Rogers,
Shay and Michael Black and David Lindley among others.
