Doug Norquay
Doug NorquayDoug Norquay was born and grew up in Windsor, Ontario. In 1980, he moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he developed a reputation as one of the most innovative slide guitar players in Western Canada. For thirteen years he gigged around Western Canada, performing solo and with bands such as the Wilma Grueman Blues Band, Spook and the Boogiemen, the Recession Band, the Hot Tamales, the Alley Gaters, and Tom Spike and the Frustrations.

During his sojourn in Saskatchewan he became much in demand as a musical writer for theatre, creating pieces for the Saskatoon Fringe Festival, the University of Saskatchewan, AKA and the Neutral Ground Galleries.

He also found time to record two independent releases, the self-titled "Doug Norquay" and the 1992 release, "Cadillac Shoes".

In 1993, Doug moved to Guelph, Ontario, in the Toronto region and Toronto took notice. Doug has been asked to open for acts that range from Sue Medley to Bob Snider.

Doug draws his musical influences from a number of sources. His guitar playing reveals traces of Fred MacDowell, Howlin' Wolf and Elmore James and his lyrics are firmly rooted in blues story-telling tradition but the dark vignettes that he sketches with his lyrics owe more to the poetic sensibility of Tom Waits or Bob Dylan.

Doug Norquay has perhaps the most unassuming stage presence of any performer working today, but his quiet and shy demeanor vanishes when he rips into one of his fiery songs. Passion, intensity and integrity are the hallmarks of any Doug Norquay performance. In the fall of 1995 Doug went into the studio to record his first full-length CD. It is scheduled for release in the spring of 1996.

"Doug Norquay has arrived on the scene as a potent songwriter with a hypnotic slide guitar style all his own" - Rick Fines, Jackson Delta

"You are a truly great slide player" - Holger Petersen, Stony Plains Records
