David
Woodhead’s creative instrumental work has appeared on many, many albums
in the contemporary folk field- from Stan Rogers’ first two through the
latest releases by James Keelaghan (Road) and Garnet Rogers (Sparrow’s
Wing among many others). He's also recorded with innovative instrumentalists
Don Ross and Oliver Schroer, and vocalists Eileen
McGann, Loreena McKennitt, Laurel
MacDonald and Mary-Jane Lamond.
Beginning his career with the ground-breaking Perth County Conspiracy ("does not exist" was the full name), and through a spell on the West Coast, he has settled in Toronto, raised a family, and continues with writing, production, sessions and live performance with many of Canada’s creative acoustic musicians. "Sweets and Conundrums" is the answer to the question "what would this guy do if he recorded his own album?". It is a coherent collection of instrumental fantasies evoking 19th-century parlour music, spy-movie romps, and spacious dreams, all driven by a flowing melodic sense. Besides his personal bass style, David is featured on piano, banjo, guitar, mandolin, mandola, pennywhistle, accordion, and lap steel, and he shares the track sheets with Colleen Allen (reeds), Al Cross (drums), Matthew Shawn Fleming (percussion), Justin Haynes (electric guitar), Daniel Lapp (trumpet), Anne Lindsay (violin), Don Ross (acoustic guitar), Oliver Schroer (violin), Brent Titcomb (vocals), and David Travers-Smith (trumpet and Peck horn).
