| Claymen is Peter Maniatis,
Waleed Abdulhamid and Keel. In the few short months that they have been
on the Toronto music scene Claymen has been selling out copies of their
debut self-titled CD in local record stores, packing Toronto clubs at their
performances and attracting rave reviews for their music. With infectious
grooves that bring together the intensity of rock and the colour and feel
of worldbeat, Claymen puts it all together with a melodic pop sound that
is reaching the ears of Toronto.
Claymen came together serendipitously over several years. Peter and Keel met in high school and played in bands at talent shows and variety nights, but never together in the same band. Years later Keel and Waleed met in a Toronto music store where they were both trying out bass guitars and hit it off immediately. Around that time a friend of Keel's, a publisher, was having a book launching party at Lee's Palace, a popular Toronto Night Club, and wanted some live music for the occasion. Keel put a band together, including his old friend Peter and his new friend Waleed and started writing songs just for that show. Immediately they knew they had something good going and decided to take the songs to a friend's recording studio and create their first album. The album was recorded in the spring of 1996 and released in November of that year at a packed show at Toronto's premier rock music venue, the legendary Horseshoe Tavern. In the few months since then, Claymen have been writing new songs that are catching the ears of their audience, getting prime spots at Toronto's night clubs and collecting momentum and new fans at every one of their shows. The band is getting ready to take their music and their mascot, Clay, on tour throughout Ontario where they feel their rockin' worldbeat pop will continue to catch the attention of music lovers. |
